Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Robert Oster African Gold

This is review #52 in my series. Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: The zoom camera didn't like this one much - it's more yellow, less brown, and without those weird orange halos. :) Color in the video seems most accurate.

As expected, cleaning was quick and easy with plain water.

And here is a screen of the final result, for those not interested in the video:

Great shading! Use this doppelgänger, with a touch of Liquitex, as a stand in for Kobe #21 Taisanji.

Add lightness and simplicate.

Yes, Robert Oster is the shade-king! I have a lot of his inks. Mountain of Ink has a review of Kobe #21 with comparison to African Gold, and yeah, quite similar!

Are you saying you've put Liquitex in FP ink? And put it in a fountain pen? Does it act as a flow aid, lubricant, or both? Safe for FPs? I don't recall hearing about it here before, though I could have forgotten. Or do you use it (the combo) for art purposes?

And speaking of doppelgänger, Robert Oster Green Lime is very close to the far more expensive Caran d'Ache Delicate Green - and both shade beautifully. I haven't bought a bottle yet, but it is a nice cheerful green.

I put the ink in a vial and add a wee bit (flow aid). Glycerine (lubricant) too sometimes. The glycerine may make it a tad darker.:

Great review interest with some "wizzy" sound effects! Funny how this ink looks almost murky green and then dries into gold.... . Good job! :)

Yes, I pay the neighbors, the airport, and the Army National Guard folk to remove mufflers, buzz the house, etc. while I record ink reviews.

Went back and watched the video and it does seem to have a little bit of green before drying. Not so sure that's there in real life, but browns do tend to have a green element...

Thanks! :)

Thanks for the review. Don't have this ink, but oddly enough, a pen pal just mentioned it in his latest letter.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

That is an interesting one, never would have thought about it, thanks for the heads up :)

You're welcome! I do find these "gold" inks interesting.

Then you might want to try Heart of Gold.... to get your gold fix, unless you have secret laundry dealings with Quintus, the 5th ;)

 I have a sample of Heart of Gold - it just hasn't been voted to the top yet.

I have a sample of Heart of Gold

But not an actual heart of gold? What a shame.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

 Hmm. Now I need to find a heart surgeon and find out if this is even theoretically possible - gold chambers, gold valves, gold pumps. I wonder just how heavy that would be and if it would throw one off balance... :P

So a nice shading ink which requires a wet noodle to work best....well no issues here for me but no need for this color as of yet, color is nice though. The color change part is interesting to me though (it always is for some reason as long as its not changing to invisibility it then becomes interesting for different reasons.... :lticaptd:).

PS- so 5th wizard is collecting gold probably filling a piggy bank which may look like gold in a world written with gold (this ink) while removing stains which are likely to be gold from trying to make stone into gold.....interesting.
