I'm with Ron Z in principle, if not practice.

I basically have just Platinum Blue Black inked up right now across 4 pens with one left over Preppy with Carbon Black in it (unused) and another Preppy with Noodler's Waterase Black for some whiteboarding.

But as for legitimate writing, I prefer to unify on a single color and then use that one until I convince myself that there was something wrong, and switch to another color across my entire lineup. And in this case, I'm using Platinum Blue Black because it's the most energizing and creative ink for me at the moment, surprisingly more so than quite a few other options.

I have been focusing on keeping inks in pens for longer periods of time, refilling multiple times rather than skipping around so much.

Currently I have four pens inked, with three different inks represented:

Rohrer and Klingner Scabiosa - always in a pen because of iron gall properties

De Atramentis Cola - returning to this one that sat unused for a couple of years

KWZ Inks Green Gold - I almost always have a murky color in a pen, and this one is lovely

What pen do you feel does most to showcase Scabiosa?

My favorite has been a rebranded Jinhao x750, but only immediately after a fill or use of the converter to restore saturation in the feed.

It is a dry ink, but I have it in a Pilot Metro fine nib and use it as my postcard pen.  If used often on regular papers, I would choose a wetter writer, but I find Scabiosa pretty versatile.

Thank you for your reply.  I have used it mostly in a Platinum Balance M but am often wistful when I see online samples that show a more dramatic line.

I have a lot of pens filled with different inks but I would say that my most used inks right now are

  • for writing/notes/note-taking
    • R&K Scabiosa
    • Vinta Mulberry Ubi (purple yam)
    • KWZ Iron Gall Violet #3
    • Cult Pens/Diamine Deep Dark Purple
    • Hero 232 Blue-Black
    • Diamine Salamander
  • and for calligraphy
    • L'Artisan Pastellier Callifolio Bourgogne
    • Herbin Bouquet d'Antan
    • Herbin Gris Nuage
    • Diamine Earl Grey
    • Ostrich 2017 Flower collection Sakura, without shimmer.
    • All the Ostrich 2018 Flower collection shimmer inks.

My favorites of those - if I ran out I would buy them again - are Scabiosa, Ubi, Salamander, Bourgogne, Bouquet d'Antan, Gris Nuage, & Sakura. Hero 232 is a great workhorse and, when a 'normal' color is required or called for, that's what I use. The Ostrich shimmer inks are great colors overall and, while I don't think I'll ever get another shimmer ink, with this set I probably have all the shimmer I could ever want.

Of note is a large bottle of Heart of Darkness that seemed to have turned grey and didn't seem to restore to black, even after a few tries of very vigorous shaking on different occasions.  Well, I decided to use it as a test ink in an old pen I recently picked up. Gave it a few shakes again and ... yes, it's back in black! 🤘

I've also received Diamine Damson, tried a dip, and love the color - will go into one of my regular writers when the next fill is needed.

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.
    • Ceilidh
Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
