Ongoing Problem With Kaweco Ice Sport Nib

Hello!

I have an ongoing problem with my Kaweco Ice Sport nib that I don't know how to fix. I find that it skips on my first downstroke (1 out 5 times or so) after I lift it off the paper to start a new stroke. I had originally thought that maybe it was a dirty nib, or misaligned tines.

I've used it for some time now (I think it was my 3rd pen ever...out of a lot ), and it has been cleaned over and over. I also bought a cheap loupe off Amazon so that I could take a closer look at the tines, and I don't think there is any significant misalignment or baby's bottom.

I keep coming back to it because I love the huge eyedropper capacity...plus it's small and portable and travels well. It is also such a nice writer the other 99% of the time that I forget how annoying that downstroke is, until I use it.

Anyone else run into this issue? Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

If you don't think it's Baby's Bottom, try different ink or different paper. Some coated paper is not very suitable for certain pen + ink combinations if there's not perfect contact with paper.

I have two fine point Kaweko Sports and experienced the same problems as you. I used a brass shim to "floss" the nibs and it solved the problem.

I had a similar problem with the fine nib on my Kaweco Sport. A very skilled person tried to adjust it, but the problem persisted.

Converting the pen to fill via eyedropper made a significant difference, but what has made the most difference is to use very wet inks, most recently Birmingham Waterfront Dusk. With such inks, the pen produces a far broader line than before, but at least the flow is consistent, and because I no longer have to press on that first stroke to ensure the flow of ink, I am also less aware of how brittle the nib has always felt to me.

I have had problems with the OE Kaweco nibs. In a Frosted Sport Banana and a Perkeo in Indian Summer. In both cases I used a Bock nib. For the Sport you can get the short body #5 variant , (type 060). I even bothered to get a black coated nib so the Perkeo looked right.

Does the Ice Sport take a screw-in nib, or can you pull the nib & feeder out?

Maybe the OE Kaweco nibs are not finished so well?

either one or the other cause may be true.

I've more than once found Kaweco Sport nibs to have the tines very tight, but that usually is also accompanied by dry writing, not just skipping.

If flossing the nib does not work (I use an old piece of camera film, very mild on the nib and gradual) it might be baby bottom, which is difficult to identify even with a lope. In that case you might need to use micromesh, however document yourself (do a google search and read and watch some videos on how to do it) before you try it out, as it's not difficult to overdo it and ruin the nib....

Kawecos to me are the most inconsistent nibs out there. My first Sport was an absolute dream to write with, out of the box. Got another, and completely unusable. The next two, one usable and one not. The fifth, a dream again.

If I didn't love the form factor of the Sport so much I wouldn't keep returning to it.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
