Oh wow!! Thank you for showing. These are some stunning pens! I love vintage Onoto pens and their nibs. Mabie Todd nibs can be a hit or miss, but I've never encountered a vintage Onoto nail. I also like very much the modern Onotos. The Magna model is light, well balance and very comfortable to hold. The vintage Magna is one of my all time favourites.

Just thought I'd keep the ball rolling here!

Any thoughts on the vintage Magna?

Some say these early Onotos are finicky and hard to get used to. Not so in the case of this well-behaved centenarian - a quarter of a turn is all it takes for the perfect ink flow.

This is my oldest working fountain pen and one of my best writers.

Picked up this Onoto 49 hooded nib P51 style pen. Rolled gold cap with relatively cheap feeling plastic body and bar fill. I'm assuming this is post Strathendry and probably from Australia. Can't find anything about it. Any clues as to its place in the Onoto world?

I should have said it is definitely not a K series - I know those pens. As noted above it is not a piston filler but an aerometric style bar filler. On the barrel is stamped Onoto 49 and nib size M. That's it.

Very nice  selection of Onoto Pens here!!

Magna for me is is the  classic pen that connect us to HUB OF ONOTO INTO  IT'S HISTRY OF THIS ICONIC WRITING INSTRUMENT.

Wonderful pen that keep the history of Onto  writing thriving on our time. :)

thanks @como, a serendipitous find.  the seller tells me that it had been sitting in storage for a decade or two - on inking, all the seals are intact.   does take a bit of fiddling to get the right amount of ink flow by messing with the plunger position.  the modern magna is much easier to use - if only there were modern magnas with vintage number 7 nibs!

A fantastic collection! Looks like a page straight from Stephen Hall's Onoto book 👍.

fresh from being restored - onoto 5601

Congrats on the pen and the restoration! I always find the Onoto section, so characteristic of vintage Onoto, very comfortable to hold and to write with.

What a beauty Eric! Huge nib, but I can't tell if it's plunger fill. I'm not sure from the photo (no scale) whether it's a mammoth?

Cheers,

Ralf

thanks @como, this restoration was too fiddly for me with a broken plunger rod that needed replacement.   i am fond of the long thin sections as well, feels different from a lot of modern pens.

@eckiethump eric, that mammoth looks like if you just bought it from their shop in the 1920s.  congratulations.

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.
    • Ceilidh
Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
