R & K sketchINK Marlene….

 

In my exploration of waterproof inks, I was long intrigued by the beauty of Marlene.

 

It’s one of those rich full-bodied blues with lovely, lovely shading with Ahab. It’s an that ink that makes me happy. As I wrote I realized I was whistling this tune. A lovely nostalgic song, from one of the darkest hours in human history. Yet also a song that saved two lives.

 

I often wonder if the marketing guys at R&K gave this name consciously, after Marlene Dietrich and her seminal movie the Blue Angel or if it’s all just subconscious…

 

Here are my impressions….

 

· Pens used: Ahab, Jinhao 450

· Shading: Beautiful with Ahab

· Ghosting: Depending nib/ flow combination

· Bleed through: As above.

· Flow Rate: Really nice…

· Lubrication: Good

· Nib Dry-out: No.

· Start-up: Depends on the pen.

· Saturation: A lovely deep sky blue…

· Shading Potential: Oh yes….

· Sheen: Some on TR

· Spread / Feathering / Woolly Line: None

· Nib Creep / “Crud”: Yes on some pens…

· Staining (pen): Nope.

· Clogging: Nope. But I guess it would help to use a pen wash.

· Water resistance: Oh yes.

· Availability: Only in bottle.

Thanks for the nice, personal review. Reminds me a bit of Diamine's China Blue and/or R&K's Blue and White Porcelain. Still, too nice to be named M after Dietrich, who I hate. She's buried in my cemetery, so I avoid her when I visit Ferruccio Busoni.

I doubt if the guys and R & K named it after her.... That was my interpretation :)

I don't have China blue, I can't say. The ink can be a bit flat on Rhodia but on Midori with flex it is delightful...

In my younger years, I attended Busoni's Doktor Faust.

It seems a life time ago....

What is/was a long time ago for me was when I bought this 3-LP (Deutsche Grammophon) album. I not only collect inks but also music. In those days, LPs, of course. And Busoni especially. I'm not into operas but because Busoni composed Doktor Faust (his only opera), I needed that "piece" too.

It's about time that I get this ink (even if) alone for the comparison of all three.

Good review, Yazeh! The Ahab on Midori image is a really nice blue! :)

Yes. On Midori and TR it's lovely. On Rhodia it could look flat ;)

Well, in those times I was into a lot of "obscure" read "marginal" composers... From Medieval bards to Entartete musik, but that's another story and another forum.... :D

      Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

      It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

      Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

      Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

      @asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
