Remarkably Sharp Barrel Imprint On Mandarin Yellow Duofold Sr

This pen is on auction since a few days and it will likely sell for a lot of money but is that laser-sharp barrel imprint something worrying?

If you are thinking of bidding look for cracing especially around the cap lip.

I asked the question because I remember a history of many years ago of dozens of fake mandarin yellow Duofolds and fake Parker 51 Vac Demonstrators being sold on ebay at that time (around 2012). The pens were a mix of genuine vintage parts combined with newly made parts. Some pens had remarkably sharp barrel imprints. David Nishimura wrote an interesting comment on that matter here.

 

These fake pens (not to be confused with the Kullock Parker remakes that never had barrel imprints) have contaminated many pen collections and the fear was that they would pop up for sale again sooner or later.

Unfortunately, I think this may be the same seller again that David referenced....that imprint is just TOO sharp to my eye, and if you look closely at his feedback, it references several pen COPIES.

 

I would tread with caution if I was you. A beautiful pen but possibly not real.....and just my opinion.

The 51 Demonstrator is not Parker. Again, as was the case last time, I will not divulge how I know, the guy is good. I dont want him to know what to change.

We had a guy in Spain mixing vintage and genuine parts on Mandarins, but he also missed out a small detail.

 

On the other hand, if you´ve seen enough Mandarins, these just felt like....too perfect for a pen made in the late 20´s.

how are these imprints made ? Are they made using heated wax? or some form of a paint ? just wondering as "Duofold" L and D is showing a bit of fethering around the letters.

The crispness of the imprint didn't worry me too much, i have seen something similar before on hardly used pens, on the evidence of what I could see in the pics I must admit I was taken in.

 

It is a pity that if someone has the skills to make such a good copy that they cannot use those skills to make an honest pen of their own.

Sometimes you can’t do much about it. There has been a “prototype” cap 51 on eBay for a while. Problem is it isn’t a prototype cap it is an aftermarket cap and several people have mentioned it but the seller wants it to be and so it is.

 

Likely it will sell and the buyer will be quite happy and not know until someone in the know examines the pen. Imagine getting 4 5k+ pens to appraise and having to tell The owner they paid 22k for three copies and a severely damaged pen...

I have seen a perfect condition genuine pen sell for £900, about $950.

 

There is another genuine one for sale now with a list price of £1100, about $1200.

 

There are some similar pens with repaired cap cracks, not as perfect as the OP and the repair is visible, for £400-600 aorund $550

Looks like they are at it again. A duofold demonstrator is up for auction. It is almost as though they combined the last two auctions into a single pen.

Well since Farmboy own one of those Duofold Demonstrators and I can go look at it, I think I am safe in saying that it isn't quite right.

 

Notice he has another perfect Mandarin Duofold for sale. Fair warning, Farmboy thinks these are copies using Parker metal parts. But not everyone wants to listen to a hayseed.

Yep.....I am watching it and the Demonstrator just out of sheer curiosity to see how high they go.
