Pelikan M800 Nib Exchange

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have a few (!) pens and I rarely use my M800 I pretty much use my M200 because of the fine nib. Its perfect but a bit light in my hand. As for the 800, I love the feel but its a medium nib and I'd like to have it with a fine nib. Is there a way to exchange ( or maybe a trade?) adding a few $? I don't want to pay 250 or so, I'm in Montreal, Canada.

Thanks

Jérôme

If you don't want to buy a whole replacement nib, which will give you the advantage of having a choice of different nibs on hand, I suppose you could always just send the pen/nib you currently have to a nibmeister to regrind, and I doubt that'll cost you the same as a new 18K gold M800 nib.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

Interesting idea. If there's a deal for a gently used one I'd be interested.

As for the grinding, could a member recommend someone here in Montreal? Or maybe in Canada? Another option, someone recommendation for USA... I never dealt with a nibmeister and I'd be afraid of someone messing it up. Furthermore, a modified nib might lower the value of the pen or not?

And if its like 100$, then a used one might be a better option if the price is right...

It depends on who modified the nib and in what way.

I'm sure if you got, say, John Mottishaw or Mike Masuyama to customise a nib to extra fine cursive italic with added flex -- or whatever is the obsession of users who want "line variation", but don't want to have to write with disciplined technique for the desired outcomes on the page -- that would be considered something that raises the value of the pen to those prospective buyers who are specifically interested in that kind of grind. On the other hand, if you did a DIY nib width reduction, then even if you got it to exactly how you like it, others may not see it as a value-add.

Although not an ideal answer in terms of aesthetics you could put a M200 nib into the M800. It would look a bit undersized but would function correctly.

The M200 nib unit will be too small for the M800 barrel. It wont work, not even suboptimally.

Two ideas: 1) just sell the m800 because the other pen is proving an acceptable substitute, or 2) trade for an m800 nib unit you will use.

Ah, you're right of course. M200 will only work up to the M600 barrel. Thanks for catching this.

Just keep it. Tastes evolve. After a few years it might happen you prefer the M nib M 800.
