Aurora Optima 996

I am interested in buying an Optima but I am not very educated on the different kinds. What is meant by "996" in the Aurora Optima 996?

Clearly it is a variant of the Optima but is it a smaller size pen?

I have seen 996 widely used by authorised dealers as a designator for standard Optima pens, covering standard range and limited edition 365 pens.

The standard Optima is a piston filler with an ink window.

996 is the product code number for the Aurora Optima

I noted down some of the models which differ in a two letter code after 996 depending on the colour version

996 B blue auroloide gold trim

996 CB auroloide blue silver trim

996 V auroloide green gold trim

996 CX auroloide burgundy silver trim

996 CR auroloide red silver trim

996 CG black pearl silver trim

996 OR auroloide orange gold trim

996 CmX auroloide burgundy MINI silver trim

I've not searched for other codes, but that's how it works anyway

I also notice that 946 is used for the 75th Anniversary inspired models, such as the recent Oceani collection, and 888 is used for the modern Aurora 88.

It is my impression that the modern Aurora 88 pens still use that designation. Depending on cap material and hardware, model numbers vary, e.g.,, 800, 801, etc. The Aurora 888 pens are limited editions, e.g., the Planet series.

If I am wrong, I would appreciate a correction.

Addendum: Here are some Aurora 88 model numbers for regular production, large pens. (There are other model numbers for the small 88 models and the LE's):

800

Black resin and cap. Gold trim

800-C

Black resin. Chrome trim

806

Black barrel. Chrome trim and cap.

801

Black barrel. Gold cap and trim.

803

Black barrel. Silver cap. Gold trim.

809-NN

“Unica” model - Satin finish black resin

81X

Small 88 models

87X

Roller ball models

82X, 83X

Ballpoint models

You are very much right. Another mistake that I’ve made in the above post was that 946 is for models in the like of the 85th Anniversary instead.
