Here’s a modern take on the Rocket design from my Legendary Pencil Company-

That doesn't look like the Rocket models listed in the old Autopoint catalogues, but I have limited resources since the historical web site was discontinued.

I looked at mechanical pencils again on eBay. I found two vintage Autopoint pencils that I ended up buying after getting offers on them. One has the rocket clip on a red cap, and an ad for Armco steel. I remember my Dad driving us around KC showing us the old Armco works. The other is a cracked ice version with an ad for Philips 66. That ties into my Dad again. We mapped Route 66 in Missouri plus the 13 miles in Kansas. My Dad liked the old gas pumps. He could always identify what used to be a gas station in towns. It’s the older version of the logo in orange and black. I think my Dad would have liked these. I miss him so much.

Good for you. I have several and use them all the time. Also, I use the "wet noodle" from Legendary Lead.

Some day, I’ll order from Legendary Lead. I like the etchings he is doing on the new Autopoint pencils. But what color, and which design?  Choices!  And of course get some of the lead you recommended.

Wet Noodle is like the Mitsubishi 9850 or the famous Blackwing 602 which does not take a lot of pressure to produce a dark script. You'll like it and if you don't, I will buy it from you.

The vintage Autopoint mechanical pencils arrived today. The Phillips 66 version is from Newton, KS. The ARMCO is from Butler, PA.

Those are beautiful @Misfit  I read once, the rarest Autopoint is the one that doesn't work.

@Estycollector good quote!  Do you know anything about Ritepoint?  I saw those on eBay. I was looking at Legendary Pencils, and put items in the basket, but haven’t bought yet. The new Autopoint I put in the basket was a yellow with black grip in the chevron pattern. Plus some lead.

I do not know anything about the brand, but I am familar.

Since I began to collect Autopoint pencils, I rarely see some models like the Rocket listed. It seems like a few sellers have most of the auctions listed. If you can find one of the large diameter type from the 1920's and intact, that would be a good one to collect. I was able to find new erasers to fit both of the ones I found. Since I choose to focus on the Rocket model, I have been able to find all of the various models over time. I use them every day, mostly for underlining the books I am studying.

Also, Autopoint produced excellent multi-functional pocketknives.

I use my mechanical pencils in crossword puzzle books.  Sometimes also with Sudoku books until I discovered Pilot Frixion erasable ink pens. I have a fondness for customizable multi pens.

I finally placed an order from Legendary Lead. I got Wet Noodle, Like Buttah for 1.1, and the H grade of 0.9 lead.

I also bought the 2024 holiday mechanical pencil. Since they had snowflakes on them, which just barely touches the holiday in my opinion, I got the blue with silver snowflakes to stand for Winter. Holidays are candy canes, holly, ornaments, trees, Santa, or Santa hats. I know that doesn’t cover all holiday images, but they are the ones that come to me. I suppose if the red and green had been available, I would have chosen it. I also know I’m not the engraver, so I can have flights of fantasy for design ideas.

I think you will enjoy the dark soft “wet noodle” leads.
