Curious 51 Dj / Wing Sung 601 Compatibility

Like most of you, I was mildly surprised when the rash of vacumatic 51 clones appeared a couple of years back (and even more surprised when the revised 601 with O rings instead of a diaphragm was released).

It's taken the Covid-19 lockdown to let curiosity to get the better of me, but the thread and outer diameter of the blind cap are practically a perfect fit for the 51's tassie and jewel. It's just bizarre to me that they would bother copying the thread, especially.

Neat!

I wonder if it’s due to existing tooling. Or maybe “why reinvent the wheel when Parker already did it right the first time”

Or maybe it’s just an industry standard threading?

Either way, thanks for the info! :)

Just give me the Parker 51s and nobody needs to get hurt.

So, can you use a 51 diaphragm on a 601?

I don't know about that, Pajaro. I was curious about the version that uses O rings in place of the diaphragm, so that's what I bought.

Maybe because they can't come up with an original idea and had to copy a proven, extremely popular design?

Possibly, but they'd have to source a DJ in the first instance. Pretty much any thread would have done the job!

Anybody had a 601 break? It seems pretty solid to me, but many pens I have bought of recent manufacture have had issues.

Ill add this as i hold my teal blue DJ WS 601 in my hand and look at the OP pictures...

Parker's Jewel and tassie is MUCH nicer than the one WS went with... that stepped design on the tassie looks so good comparatively.

Makes me want a DJ "51" even more than i already did...

OUCH, my wallet hurt just from saying that... :P

Just give me the Parker 51s and nobody needs to get hurt.

i have a demonstrator 601 that in the right light shows some cracks in the barrel. but thats likely my fault as i got a little aggressive cleaning it out one day

that said, it still works fine :)

Mine's fine, but it's practially new still.

  • 2 months later...

I recently got two of the WS 601 clear demonstrators and have one of them inked up with Waterman's Blue-Black. I also inked up a Parker 51 vacuum-filler with the same ink, and a Parker 51 squeeze-filler with Waterman Florida Blue ink. I want to compare the three at some point.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
