Snap-On Cap Fountain Pen Recommendations

Few snap on caps have the satisfactory feel of the Diplomat Aero as it clicks into place. So slick you may find yourself unclipping and clipping it absent-mindedly in a boring meeting.

Also, the Karas Vertex models have a substantial O-ring inside the cap that makes the clip-unclip motion very smooth as well.

This is so true. Diplomat did something magnificent with the Aero's snap cap. The tactile feel is very addictive to me for some reason.

Some currently produced snap cap pens with gold nibs:

Platinum brier wood 3776 or the gathered 3776

Yard o led pens.

Pilot silvern with inset nib

Sailor sterling silver 1911

Thanks for the Silvern suggestion. I was not aware of this pen. It reminds me of vintage Pilot I used to have. Nib and section looks the same as on Elite 95s and I like that nib. Unfortunately it has limited availability in Europe but I will look out for one.

Is Silvern long enough to be used without posting? With the exception of Japanese long/short format pens I tend not to post my pens. Thanks

Lamy Accent

That model has a screw cap. I have a new one right in front of me that I was playing with last night.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

yes. It also has more girth than the E95S. I can post some pics if it helps. Which pen do you want to compare it against for dimensions?

In case you wish to write to me, pls use ONLY email by clicking here. I do not check PMs. Thank you.

Pilot Custom 74, Parker Sonnet or Aurora Optima if possible. These are average size pens I find comfortable. Many thanks

Thank you for correcting me! I thought I had played with one at a pen show and it had a snap-on cap.

I just got a Karas Vertex and am loving it. It's $130 with a steel nib, more for Ti or Gold. It works C/C or Eyedropper and even comes with a pipette to fill it with ink for 1.75ml of ink. It has plenty of o-rings so you don't have to use grease to seal it.

Laguna Niguel, California.

Should you consider buying a used pen, the vintage Aurora 88P meets all your needs: slip cap and a piston filler (and a very good 14K nib) and not too hard to find. The Franklin Christoph Model 20 (Marietta) and the Aurora Ipsilon are both excellent pens IMHO, the latter having this satisfying 'click' when pulling/pushing the cap (and posting it too).

Thanks. I have Vintage Aurora 88P. It’s a nice pen. I sold Model 20. It was nice but I got ink on cap couple of times. I may try Aurora Ipsilon one day.

Lamy Studio and I think most of Pineider pens are magnetic snap on as well.

The Studio is a snap-cap, but if the OP didn't like the section on the 2000, then the Studio will probably be worse! I have actually never tried a Pineider, but have had my eye on them

They had already been mentioned but I highly recommend the 1960s-1970s Montblancs for a snap-on cap: the 1X Serie, the 2X, the 2XX, the 1XX... They are really great: amazing nibs and good pistons.

How did you come to that conclusion, when the O.P. has not offered any details as to why he doesn't like the grip on the Lamy 2000? He didn't so much as specify which version: Makrolon? Stainless steel? Black Amber? All of the above? It could be that he doesn't like the 'ears', or the texture of the brushed steel, or the specific girth or taper. The Lamy Studio range does not have 'ears' on the section, and no model features a brushed steel section as far as I know. The chrome, rubber, and palladium-finish sections on different models all have different textures, but none of those feel like brushed steel.
