Question On Iron Gall Ink

I like them for the permanence. Hate it when a spill, rain or worse, damages my notes/sketches.

If one wants period-coherent inks, the best way is to get a bottle of wine, some water, either oak galls or the stuff already crystallized, an old recipe from an old "copy" book (there are many, almost every book on handwriting until the 20thC had one or more), a dispensable cauldron, some cotton cloth... and make it oneself.

But then, don't expect to use that with a fountain pen. It would be too corrosive and likely also obstruct the ink channel after some use. That stuff is for dip pens only.

If you are to be ephemeral, leave a good scent.

ESSRI, R&K Salix and Scabiosa,

I have all three.

Essr (a BB) has one of the longest threads ever on FPN, over 17 pages....It was then liked more than Diamine Registry ink.

I called it a sneaky ink, our passed Sandy1 called it mischievous.

I don't remember if it was 17 papers or 17 different pens or both. It was ages ago, and what ever it was was lost on Paybucket.

ESSR has no chemicals in it so is only good for 2-3 years. Reasonable price for 110ml plastic bottle.

Depending on the paper it can go down blue and you can watch it change before your eyes, some papers took a day, others, three days to go near black.

Richard Binder said a good BB ink will change color in about a day.

One paper ...Eaton's Corrasable typewriter paper...25% rag, medium weight....16 pound. It never changed at all.:yikes:

Typewriter papers are only coated on one side...it's real great paper....if you are using only one side...and you will use one side in it a bleed through champ...

It's a good time to take out a sheet of that paper:D...got to use it up in the next decade. I got near half a pack left...80 pages to a pack...and the price was $1.05 so I've had it near 50 years.
