Hello And A Very Odd Platinum 3776 Sf Nib

Recommended Posts

Hello there,

Having recently by bitten hard by the FP bug I've not only bought a few pens but also spent a lot of time on this website which is fantastic !

I wanted to share some odd experience with a Platinum 3776 soft fine I bought earlier this week.

The pen I received had nib marked SF, but I immediately noticed that not only it was extremely smooth ( unexpected given the reputation for feedbacky nibs on this pen ), it wrote rather broad and rather stub-like...

Upon close inspection the nib indeed looked like it had been ground to a stub. I have returned it to the seller for an exchange, but I'm a bit puzzled about how this happened.

I wonder if it was a return from a cheeky customer who took it upon himself to grind it and decided he didn't like it after all, or a factory error.

Nice photos! Very clear. Kudos to you.

This is the rhodinated 14K gold SF nib on my Platinum #3776 Century pen, and you can see there is tipping:

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

Thanks for the comparison photos ! That's what I would have expected it to look like.

Where did you purchase it from? Was it sold as new?

CultPens in the UK. Yes was sold as new, and it still had a sticker and looked brand new so a factory error is more likely, but this is still quite surprising.

Interesting - it probably is a factory anomaly. I almost would have kept it just for the novelty of it.

it's hard to tell from the pictures but the tip was pretty smooth and it wrote smoothly, had it broken off I would have expected it to have sharp edges.

Maybe it broke off at the factory and someone went ahead and polished it anyway.

Agree that the tipping didn't broke off, the smoothness OP was describing can only lead to the conclusion that the nib was adjusted that way.

Im afraid the pen is gone and I should be getting a replacement tomorrow :)

Heres a very short sample.

Though it felt nice to use I didnt really like the line it put down - not sharp enough for decent italic, and the stubbiness made the line variations from applying pressure hard to see.

Not a mod I would recommend all in all 😁

Apologies for the rotated picture I’m not sure why the website does that.

I received the replacement on Monday ( kudos to CultPens for the quick turnaround ), and the nib on this one is normal.

After two days of writing with it I’m a bit on the fence though, it’s nice, but it does not blow me away.

It’s rather on the dry side I find.

Most users — including both fans and detractors — have reported that the Platinum #3776 SF nibs are dry, which isn't inherently a bad thing (and 'wet' isn't automatically 'better' or expected), but it depends on what the individual really wants his/her pen to do.

I have now also got a Platinum #3776 SM nib, and I find it too wet and broad for my liking.

Where did you get the sm nib? Why is it not more broadly available?

Where did you get the sm nib?

From La Couronne du Comte. As part of a whole pen as a SKU, and not a 'spare' or 'replacement' nib. What exactly did you mean by that question?

Why is it not more broadly available?

How should I know? Platinum alone decides what it'll offer in the market.

Relatively dry is pretty typical for Platinum 3776 pens, and it’s either a good thing or not, depending one one’s preference and factors like paper quality.

In my experience, the SF nibs are 'drier' than the F nibs, though.

I probably would have kept that odd soft stub, and the writing sample looks good to me. Although without the hard tipping material, it's unclear how easily the nib end would wear out and change shape. If you want a "soft" nib, one of the common recommendations is a Pilot with FA nib.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
