Rollerball Or Ballpoint - Purple Recommendations

So, I've already got my wife her Mont Blanc, her Antique Mable Todd, and a collectible Monteverde Sleeping Beauty Pen, but recently she was able to get one of her novels picked up by a publisher and she will be signing some books. I thought about getting her a pen that reflects "her" that isn't too expensive, uses good refills. so a rollerball or ballpoint pen so when she signs it dries fast, but she loves everything purple...

I've see the Parker IM in a lavender color that looks great, for a good price... what do some of you suggest? Not expensive, but not cheap since it's a gift, $20-$40 range, which the Parker IM fits... and I've read great things that the Schmidt 9000 refill fits it.

Oh, I also noticed Lamy had a Dark Lilac limited pen a few years ago that is still available, but the grip is weird.

Thanks everyone,

Pentel Energel Alloy RT Violet/Purple with their purple ink too!

Thanks for that! I wonder if the Parker IM or Jotter pens could use those Gel Refills?? Or the Lamy Safari? They just look a bit better

I really like the idea of the violet ink and the Pentel Gel Ink is fast drying, so perfect for signing a book that will be closed fast. hmmm, the Parker pens just look a bit nicer, but really as long as it writes good. thoughts on refill compatibility?

Parker cannot use Energel refills, but Lamy Safari can with a spacer on the back of refill. I'm using a Vista R/B with Energel refill right now.

When I saw this thread Pentel Energel came to mind IMMEDIATELY. Nice to see that someone else shares the same opinion, great minds think alike! :D

You could get a more expensive purple pen (more of a showstopper) that is compatible with pentel refills, and put one of those energel refills in. They write really well and are purple.

:)

On that note, recently I've seen Karas Kustoms The Bolt V2 in purple, which according to their new design can be refilled with Energel:

Thanks, I've decided to get the cheaper Energel Pentel pen mentioned here, see how it goes and then in the future get a higher end holder for it. Probably a good idea to not bring an expensive pen to a signing anyway. Thanks for all the tips... I've bookmarked them!

It takes a bit of effort, but I'm 99% sure the Parker IM can use an Energel/Sarasa/Pilot G2 refill. I'm not sure I've put an Energel in an IM, but I have two IMs with Sarasa refills and the Energel and Sarasa are very similar.

It involves wrapping a little bit of tape around the end of the refill and putting a spring or spacer in the barrel before you put the refill in.

You can use colorful tape as an accent, electrical tape so it will look somewhat like a stock Quink refill or you can gently cut the tape away once everything is put together.

I am using a Dark Lilac Safari with a violet Energel today so I can definitely confirm that works pretty easily.

I think you're talking about IM rollerball pens. I was referring about IM ballpoint pens.

Can you post a picture with your set-up please? I'm curious now.

PaperMate InkJoy gel pens. Smooth, different sizes, many colors (including purple).

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, the gift went over great, she loves it and how the pen writes. I bought the 12 pack of refills also.

Thanks!

Happy to help!

Pilot Metropolitan has a beautiful purple color, and it comes as a ballpoint or a rollerball in addition to a fountain pen. My daughter is obsessed with purple, and one of her gifts for her most recent birthday was the rollerball version of this pen with her name engraved on it.

I no longer own any fountain pens... Now they own me.

I assume this is applicable to all Lamy RB's?

Pentel Energel refills will work in many normal rollerballs, as long as you add a spacer or cut the lenght to fit. I have a Lamy Tipo with Energel refill right now.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
