Pilot Custom Steel Patterned Pens, Vintage -- Formal Names?

MYU

Recommended Posts

I have a couple of vintage PILOT Custom steel patterned pens that probably date back to the 1970's or 1980's. The body and furniture is identical to the commonly found black stripe steel Custom fountain pen. I'm wondering if there was ever a formal name for these two pens below. I've tended to call one "fabric" and the other "swirled triangles", but it would be great to know the proper names. Thanks!

The swirling triangles pen does need a nib correction (it's how it came--I'd never bend a nib like that!)

No idea, but I think at least one pen just got added to my mental "pens to get at some point" list.

What are date codes on these two?

Thanks! I got the "fabric" one about a year ago (date code H1072), and the "swirling triangles" is a recent acquisition (date code H671). It has been on my wish list for about 8 years. After too many financially straining listings I passed up, I sort of forgot about it... until one day, I spotted one with a terribly chewed up clip and slightly bent nib. As it just so happens, I had a gold furniture black plastic Custom as a parts pen... and the clip swap was perfect. Now just have to get that nib corrected--hopefully next month at the NY/LI pen show! :)

Great scores, Gary!! :puddle:

Trying hard to be a smart-alec and suggest some alternative names but as usual, my brain is not working right now.

I'd be in trouble if these were made with chrome/steel furniture....

You can't always get what you want... but if you try sometimes... you just might find... you'll get what you need...

Hey Raf, good to see you! I hope all is well. Yeah, I think polished steel would be even more attractive. The gold furniture reflects a strong 70's aesthetic. Remember haywoody? He had a silver stripe Custom (or "white stripe") and had a thin piece of stainless steel machined to match the black center piece of the clip. He then substituted it in place of the black piece and the "P" logo disc on top, making it all monochromatic. Looked super!
