Will A Pelikan Tortoiseshell And White Stain?

oculogyric

Recommended Posts

I find myself hesitant to use my tortoiseshell and white much due to concern about the white section staining. Is this a major concern? Any inks I should avoid? (in addition to Bay State Blue ;-)

No need to worry, I would say. I've been using my two white tortoise Pelikans, M400 and M600, with quite a few different inks and never had any problems. Most of the inks were Diamine inks.

I have an M605 and a white tortoise M600. The white tortoise I've had for years, and though the white hasn't stained, the tortoise part did (with a teal ink, Tsuki-yo I believe--which does stain). I use Montblanc Unicef blue in the 605 and it is pristine, even after heavy use. So I suppose it depends on the ink.

I wouldn't worry too much. Only a LOT of use would result in staining and either way the pen is made for writing. Plus, Pelikans are some of the best-made pens out there, so staining isn't super likely unless your hands are excessively dirty.

I've seen it happen on pens that come in for repair. It depends on the ink that you use. I've also seen other damage that may perhaps be attributed to use of "boutique" inks.

Most from what I read, "boutique" ink users refuse to acknowledge that for religious grounds. .Supersaturated inks....are super...saturated, so might well stain super also.

I have read many users had no problems of the white Pelikans....but having had 'inky fingers', stayed away from those pens.....

Pelikan I don't think would sell pens it's or most classic Euro inks would stain. So MB, Lamy, Waterman, Herbin, Aurora, and Pelikan inks should be safe.

I don't know anything about Japanese inks....other than some have a reputation of being wet....saturation....could well be there in they use super skinny nibs for their tiny printed script.

While a stain is not the end of the world, I like to keep my pens in as good a shape as possible. The White Tortoise has held up well over time. I think good pen hygiene and smart ink selection go a long way to prevent staining. I try to avoid boutique and super saturated inks. I haven't had any issues to date with that strategy.

@sargetalon do you fill the white tortoise normally or use a syringe? I’ve read that one person mentioned using a syringe.

When mine arrives, Rohrer & Klingner is waiting. I have the clear ink well, and was thinking it could be filled normally from that.

Nothing fancy. I fill via the normal route and wipe away any excess ink afterwards. Never had an issue doing that.

Thank you @sargetalon. I meant to type the color of the ink but was being careful with the spelling of the brand. Alt Goldgrün will be the ink for the white tortoise. I usually have a Bounty paper towel handy when filling a pen.

No worries with Alt Goldgrün, Cacao du Bresil or Stone road of Gion. These are the 3 most used in my M400 white tortoise. Diamine Umber green and Blood orange also behaved well. None stained from inside or outside of the pen.

Normal filling, wipe with wet tissue was all that was needed.

misfit - looking forward for your post when the pen arrives!

I only had issues with one color getting on the threads--Montblanc Irish Green, which I wasn't able to clean entirely, and that was after years of normal use. I'm normally very careful, and not sure how that happened, but that's one thing I would watch out for.

I will try to remember to post in this thread when it arrives. So far the update shows Preparing to ship. The wait is suspenseful as it’s still hard to believe this pen could be at the price it was.

Thank you for the inks reports. I might still have some Cacao du Bresil left from a sample. Alt Goldgrün is my only R&K ink so far.

Sweet. an email that the white tortoise has shipped is in my in box. Earlier I cleaned the brown tortoise and filled it with Diamine Chocolate, while setting out Alt Goldgrün.

That Pelikan demonstrator looks really cool with the ink. I think I’ve only seen photos of it empty. Gives a good idea of how much ink other M200s and M400s likely hold.

I already respected Pelikan pens, but now I feel like a fan of them.

I have the 405, and it doesn't stain on the section, but I cannot get the ink stains out of the threads.

I often use KWZI El Dorado in my M400 White Tortoise. Right now it is inked with Edelstein Aventurine.

I haven't had staining, but have had challenges getting ink out from between the threads.

I have Aventurine, but still will start with Alt Goldgrün because it has not been used in awhile.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
