Ultra-Fine-Point Ballpoint Pen Not Too Expensive

My Dad, who is in his 90's, likes the ubiquitous Zebra F-301, but asked me to pick up what he called "the ultra fine point" refill for it. He wants something finer-point than the .7 mm refill which comes in the pen. From my online searching, it appears that the Zebra "ultra" is a bold point, and that there is no finer-point refill for this pen than the one he already is using. Is this correct? Is there something in this lower-price range that has a finer point than the Zebra .7? Thanks for any help you can give me.

It sure looks that way, though the Pilot V5 seems to be my go to .5mm pen. ...though I do see the attraction with the F-301.

If it isn't too bright for you, it isn't bright enough for me.

I guess I forgot to mention an important aspect, which is that he specifically wants a very fine point ballpoint. . .

It is for writing in his checkbook, so I would concur that ballpoint would give the least likelihood of bleed-through.

My pen of choice for my check register is a PaperMate Profile (slim) with the Lubriglide fine point refill; on comparison, the Zerbra .7 mm ballpoint writes a thinner line than the PaperMate fine point.

He has liked the Zebra cheapies for many years for his pocket pen. However, I am thinking that if I gave him something with a finer line that he wants for writing in his check register, maybe that one could something different that he would keep at his desk. The Pilot C-Tek looks interesting. I did not know about the C-Tek. From a quick google, it's a gel ballpoint? Would there be risk of bleed-thru?

Pentel makes a super fine one, the XLRN3. It's amazingly fine 0.3 mm line.

PILOT also makes a super BRFN-30F, which is 0.5 mm, but writes a little thinner and is super smooth.

Then it's a matter of choosing a pen that will take these refills.

For ultra-fine BP writing I use the Uni Jetstream 0.38.

Don't feel bad. I'm old; I'm meh about most things.

Hi Atmydesk,

JetPens is a great resource. They carry a few of the pens suggested in this thread and a few others, regular BPs and gel BPs.

Yes, look east -- to Japan!

Now, a man in his 90's may be reluctant to get used to a new pen? If so, you can enter modding territory. A HI-Tec C Coledo (needlepoint gel refill for a multi-pen) can be made to fit a zebra pen without too much trouble. A lot of "multipen" refills can be modified to fit since they are thin, small refills.

I had an Ultra Fine girlfriend once, but she was REALLY expensive.

Sorry! It just slipped out. :P

Add lightness and simplicate.

piloy acroball .5mm is really fine. It seems finer than the .5mm it is listed as. You can get them at jetpens or amazon.

hmmm, looks like that's the finest for that line anyways.Zebra does come in 0.3 mm in gel pens. If he is using it to write cheques why not go with a gel pen?

Zebra and Pentel both offer metal versions and they offer 0.3 to 1.0 refills.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
