Monte Grappa Of Montegrappa

Due to the very special prices of Endless Pens (read: 50% off) for some Montegrappa pens, I bought my first Italian pen, the Monte Grappa in coral red.

It has arrived today.

First look: OK, but nothing special. Trim band design looks a bit cheap. The quality of the pen looks good.

Manual doesn't say, it is a piston filler.

F nib in stainless steel: now this is a real nail - it writes a good line size but doesn't make Pelikan 4001 RoyalBlue a nice color on paper.

I would be heavily disappointed without the 50% off.

My 13 Euro Jowo stainless steel nibs are MUCH better. Even the nib of this pen is much better.

Let's see if I change my mind while using it.

Earlier this year, I picked up the black version with a 14k nib at a 20% discount. It's very nicely tuned and a lovely wet writer. I agree that the metal trim at the section looks a little flimsy, but overall it's a solid workhorse pen :)

I once pulled the nib from an Extra 1930. The tail projecting from the rear of the feed is very susceptible to damage, and I would hesitate to do it again.

@gmax

I have to admit that I was terribly wrong with this pen. After adjusting my writing style to the pen, I like it more and more. It is pen which I would now recommend.

Good news :)

Did you change the angle of the nib relative to the page, or was it something else?

Nice example of how subjective the evaluation of a fountain pen might be.

Quite disappointing at first, and then satisfactory a couple of days later.

The stainless steel montegrappa nibs are easy to swap if replacing the nib 'unit'. I remember it was simply a screw in system on my Mule similar to the visconti stainless steel nibs however, I don't remember the exact procedure so please do a search on this to be sure. I can't speak for the Extra 1930 nibs but would suggest they are different due to setting with an ebonite feed.
