Hello there.

 

Finally got around to doing an ink review... (Or should I say, scrounged up the courage) I know that it is not the greatest of reviews but even if a single person benefits from this, it would be worthwhile to me...

 

I have been wanting to try this ink for sometime now. As it was not available from the local Agents in South Africa, I was forced to import this from the UK.

Anyway, this eventually arrived along with some other goodies. Unfortunately my high expectations were slightly dashed once I had inked up a pen as it is rather close in colour to the Sailor Oku-Yama. However, the actual character of these two inks is (In my opinion) varied enough to make owning both inks worthwhile.

I mention below that the Sailor is mor "wishy-washy" than the Herbin and this statement requires a bit of an explanation. My intention with this was to attempt to explain the difference in character I perceived between these two inks. Whilst the Sailor is more lubricated and creates a sense of the nib gliding over the paper, the Herbin is slightly less lubricated and feels a bit "harder" on the paper but gives a bit better tactile "feel". If that makes any sense. Yes, nib choices obviously play a large role as well I know which might contribute to this perception of mine. As mentioned below, the test was conducted using a Namisu Orion in Ti and an italic 1.1 steel Bock nib. The Sailor comparison was done using an Italix Captain's Commission with a medium italic steel nib.

Thanks for the nice review! Looks more like a wine-red and that is fine, too. Especially at rhis time of year!! Keep it up (writing ink reviews)!!!

I'd have to see this one in person (I'm not a great fan of burgundy inks). This one bears a bit of a closer examination for me. But thanks for the review. And, well, not.... :huh:

You’ll love it. I’m halfway through my second bottle already. Very readable & my pens love it.

this is a very well made ink: problem-free in any pen, legible in all nib width including my very dry Pilot 74ef, perfectly behaves on many papers.

 

and no lack of nuances.

 

does not stain converters, behaves very well in pens.

 

this is a well made red ink, and a well made ink.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

nice review. i was excited about J. Herbin's new colors, and have really enjoyed Vert et Gris. This was the other one i was considering and i think now i might get some.

Tried it and compared it to Noodler's Burgundy. Very difficult to capture the difference in photos so I went the lazy route and took sample photos from Goulet and Jet Pens:

As subtle as the difference is, once you write a full page with these inks, the end effect is very different. Noodler's Burgundy is darker and (to me) resembles an old, deep, dark red wine. Write a page with it, and it won't junp at you. It's not a neon sign. It looks classy and peaceful. Rouge Grenat, on the other hand, is much more vibrant. It's colours are a shade lighter and seem to have an element of fluorescence. It jumps off the page. A full page of that is overkill to me.

 

Personally I'll use the Rouge Grenat in pens that write a fine line, so that not much surface area is covered. This allows me to enjoy the richness of the ink without feeling overwhelmed. With Noodler's Burgundy, that's something I use in wetter/wider pens.

But the differences in the "font" of the handwriting make it impossible to compare the two. The large swatches, IMHO, are like all large swatches and that is of relatively litlle practicle use. Better to show a paragraph or two each with sentences written with different nibs. I appreciate the effort,but It doesn't help me pick one or the other. Sorry!

      Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

      It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

      Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

      @asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
