I like the Sheaffer triumph fat liver fill pens. Liver fillers are easy to restore.

Beautiful pen set, Jim. Thanks for showing.

Hi, Folks!

This Sheaffer Deluxe Sentinel is from late 1948 and has the White Dot mounted on the cap above the clip. Sheaffer solved mounting the White Dot on the cap during 1948 leading to two versions of this model. This is the third iteration of the stainless steel cap Sentinel. Similar to the second model introduced in early 1948, it also has a polished stainless steel cap with quartets of lines engraved in the cap at a stagger start from above the gold filled cap band. It is a Vacuum-Fil or Lever-Fill (black only) and comes in the same solid molded colors, green, brown, burgundy, blue and black. It sold for $15.00 with the matching Stratowriter ballpoint for $10.00 and pencil $5.00. Sheaffer offered 16 different 14 karat gold nib grades. It measures 5 1/8 inches long, capped. The barrel on this pen is actually from the Autograph and shows the 2000 or $20.00 imprint.

Thank you for sharing this information! It's a lot of fun to read and will help me to be more observant when choosing more pens for my collection.

Hi, folks!

This is a Sheaffer Valiant II in grey striped celluloid c1945 to 1946. It features chrome plated trim. The Valiant also came in black, brown, green and carmine striped celluloid with gold plated trim. It is a Vacuum-Fil pen, also offered as a Lever-Fill in black only. It sold for $12.50 with the matching pencil for $5.00. Sheaffer offered 16 different 14 karat gold nib grades. It measures 5 1/8 inches long, capped.

I have a lot of Sheaffers, and I like the look of these pens. I've avoided them, however, because of the plunger-fillers. I realize that many people like them because of ink capacity, but the lever works much better for me (and the sac replacement is something I can do easily). What I use from this era are the lever-fill black Crests.

Nice photo, Jim! Today, I'm carrying my brown striated Sheaffer Valiant II, and it's writing well. I restored it this past Tuesday, and thought I had killed it when its feed snapped while I was removing the nib to gain access to the plunger. Happily, I had a spare feed in my parts collection, and now this pen is looking and working great.

One question: how to you date the pen so accurately? I've only been able to find Sheaffer catalogs from 1941 and 1949... nothing from the intervening years. Are such catalogs available somewhere online? Do you use advertisements in lieu of catalogs?

Personally, I love these mid-40s Vac-Fils. Devilish to repair, but great when they're working.

Thanks,

Richard

Hi, Richard,

I have copies of the 1946 and 1947 catalogs as well as a LOT of ads. I also have price lists and other information from 1941 to 1949. A lot is available on the PCA website. You can see over 150 ads on PenHero.com. I'm adding more each week.

They are great pens once restored! Thanks!

Yep, I do too and have been trying to acquire a complete set over the last few years. The chrome plated versions are almost always in fair, or worse, condition.

Sigh. So pretty! I have a brown '48 Statesman, but I love the two toned metal cap on your Sentinel. If the form factor is the same as mine it's nice and fat but the perfect length for shirt pockets.

Looks like they continued those subtle lines in the cap with the thin model Snorkel Sentinel.

Inked: Aurora Optima EF (Pelikan Tanzanite); Franklin Christoph Pocket 20 Needlepoint (Sailor Kiwa Guro); Sheaffers PFM I Reporter/Fine (Diamine Oxblood); Franklin Christoph 02 Medium Stub (Aurora Black); Platinum Plaisir Gunmetal EF (Platinum Brown); Platinum Preppy M (Platinum Blue-Black). Leaded: Palomino Blackwing 602; Lamy Scribble 0.7 (Pentel Ain Stein 2B); Uni Kuru Toga Roulette 0.5 (Uni Kuru Toga HB); Parker 51 Plum 0.9 (Pilot Neox HB)

This is a Sheaffer Vac-Fill that I bought for my daughter. But it has a plain clip.

For love of it. And yet not waste time either.

Your pen is a Sheaffer branded pen. Very nice. This thread is about the Sheaffer Vacuum-Fil sub brand. Those pens don’t say Sheaffer or have White Dots.

Thanks!

Hi, Folks!

This is a Sheaffer Triumph Sentinel DeLuxe lever-fill fountain pen c. 1945-1947. The 5 ¼ inch lever-fill Sentinel came only in black, while Vacuum-fil ones came in black, green stripe and grey stripe celluloid. This was the first Sheaffer pen with a brushed stainless steel cap. Note the Sheaffer White Dot is on the end of the barrel. Sheaffer solved the problem of mounting the White Dot on metal caps in 1948 and also introduced a new polished stainless steel cap on this model in 1948. Sheaffer offered 16 different Lifetime 14 karat gold nib grades for the pen in 1947. The price in 1947 was $15.00, the matching pencil was $5.00 and the matching Stratowriter ballpoint pen was $10.00.

Hi, Folks!

This is a Sheaffer Triumph Sentinel Deluxe in green striped celluloid c1945-1947. This 5 1/8 inch long pen shows in the 1951 Sheaffer Complete Service Policy priced at $15.00. The Sentinel was the first Sheaffer pen with a brushed stainless steel cap. Note that the Sheaffer White Dot is on the end of the barrel. Sheaffer solved the problem of mounting the White Dot on metal caps in 1948. Sheaffer also changed the Sentinel to a polished stainless steel cap in 1948. This example has a barrel stamping of 1500, indicating the price.

Jim -- could you tell us about the white dot on this particular metal cap? I've seen these rarely before-- it looks like they were mounting it in the cap within a ring of brass or gold-filled metal. It's pretty stunning I think, though the simplicity of later white dots that are directly mounted into the metal is also appealing. Any ideas why they did it this way initially?

Thanks!

Matt

Hi, Matt,

According to the March, 1948 Sheaffer's Review, Sheaffer first used a gold filled eyelet pushed through a hole in the metal cap and crimped underneath and then inserted the plastic white dot, heating it into a mushroom to hold it in place. I'm guessing that this was decorative, but an extra cost step, because it was abandoned fairly quickly.

Thanks
