3 Oysters Doldam

What the hell, your bottle is very brown and warm. Mine is cold and steely blue-grey.

Wanna trade? I hate the color of mine, I thought the goulet swab was just misleading.

Well that's an interesting development! If anybody else has bought this, do please chime in. Batch inconsistency doesn't peeve me much, but it is interesting to note and bothersome to some folks.

Doldam means "stone fence" in Korean.

Oh I know "A Rose by any other name . . ." but that only adds to the ink's charm.

Thank you for that J-P

OMG....I missed this review before. What a lovely grey! Any hints about where to find this? And that Gris Orage - havent found it yet in my usual places... Thanks for the great review!

My mistake... I meant Gris de houle - havent found that one yet.

thanks for the review. this looks nice. certainly has the potential as my next ink to get, considering i'm a fan of grey and brown inks. this doldam ink seems to be somewhere between the two colors.

Yeah, I just got my bottle in today and mine looks very different as well. Much more like Fuyu-syogun but a smidgen more blue. I like cold greys so I don't mind too much, but the ink in the OP is pretty cool looking.

Curious... I wonder if they have a bath problem. I plan to get a bottle but if it turns out to be a blue grey I would not want that.

Where did you get your bottle from? Im not sure where my sample comes from. But the swab on Goulet shows a similar colour to what I reviewed here.

I got mine from Goulet - they actually just asked me to send them a picture of my ink so they can have it for their archives.

You can see its sickly, cold blue/purple tinge.

I can't really capture just how blue it looks in writing, but it is so much less warm than iroshizuku kiri same or neutral like Lamy Agate.

Mine is from Vanness. I did a cotton swab "chromatography" and it separated out quite a bit of purple and turquoise - quite pretty actually, but definitely in the Fuyu-syogun and Gris de Payne realm for my bottle.

The colour of the writing looks okay to me. The swab does show more blue than I've experience, but the yellow part where the ink pools is quite similar to mine. Could you try to wash over your writing with a brush and water and see what colours it shows?

My pseudo "chroma" shows quite a bit of purple and turquoise as well. Maybe the exact shade of this ink is very dependant on paper and the wetness.

My desk lights are very warm. The writing is very cold and blue in person, which the swab and ink bottle show

Goulet got back to me and said their warmer color swabs were provided by 3 oysters and after checking the warehouse, their bottles are all blueish tinted. They offered me a refund in typical amazing Goulet fashion, but I just took store credit. They will be updating the ink to match it's actual color.

So I guess the first batch 3 oysters made was this lovely warmer gray but the big production batch was the sickly cold one.

This is disappointing news. Such a shame that 3 Oysters misrepresented their ink, or that their contractor didn't do it right, or whatever is the case.

Don't be too upset. This was likely a simple mistake - batch variations happen. The actual performance of the ink is still stellar. I have four 3 oysters inks and all three of the others (aqua green, mustard, purple gray) are very true to what was represented and they're all gorgeous colors, well behaved, and a good value.

In the meantime, if someone wants a really warm gray, iroshizuku kiri same is still being made. And for a more neutral-warm gray, lamy agate.

It's a bit disappointing if they can't achieve consistency between batches, but from Honeybadgers' swab, there's still that colour variation between grey, blue and yellow that I'm fond of. I guess I'll have to get a more recent sample to see how it is.

Mistakes happen. It's not like this is a routine mistake, my other 3 from the brand are perfectly true to advertisement.
