Pen Show, Tell, Display - Nakaya

I just want to say that this is one of my favorite threads ever.

 

I have eight Nakayas left from... twelve, I think (turned out, for instance, that I wanted only one Desk Pen - that sort of thing), six of them Piccolos, only one with a clip.

 

The pens you-all are showing are gorgeous! I love the group photo of the browns. So pretty!

Is there a model of Nakaya that's virtually the same dimensions as the Platinum 3776 (like the Chartres Blue model)? I have an ebonite Platinum 3776 which I like but is too thin.

Quite a few years ago, Nakaya offered a model in Jade before it later became available as a Platinum model. It is close in size to the current Chartres Blue, though I think just a bit smaller.

 

I believe the closest model Nakaya currenly offers is the Portable, somewhat larger than the 3776.

Thanks you, whichwatch! I like that the section on the Portable is wider than the 3776 but the section appears quite short. Do you find your fingers resting on the threads? Is it comfortable? I like thick and fairly long grip regions.

I personally have no grip comfort problems with the Portable. But if you like a longer section, you might check out the Nakaya Neo Standard, on right in pictures below next to the Portable. The Neo Standard has an appreciably longer section. The only feature I dislike about Neo Standard is that the threads have a single start, and require additional turns to remove or reinstall the cap.

Thanks again, whichwatch! Unfortunately, there's no Nakaya vendors in the Boston area nor at the annual Boston Pen show. So, it's hard to assess if I'd be happy with a Nakaya and which one.

Come on out to the Ohio Pen Show in a few weeks. I expect to have a dozen or so Nakayas for sale and I know a dealer who is expecting to bring some.

 

Even if you aren’t looking for Nakayas, it’s a fun and friendly show.

Also remember that each Nakaya is hand turned so things like actual section diameter, length, width, weight will vary from pen to pen even within the same model.

Is this an officially designated Day, or something just for fun? We should get it declared in the Congressional Record or something.

One is a Portable Cigar Ascending Dragon in the original Ao-tamenuri finish, and the other is a Naka-ai in Shiro-tamenuri--both finishes are no longer available. Both pens have oblique broad nibs tuned by Nibsmith, and they are lots of fun!

I have only two Nakayas, an Aki-tamenuri writer and an Ishime cigar, both bought around 2005 - 2006, but they remain two of my favorite pens.

 

Not sure if they still do this, but back then Nakaya would offer to put your name on the pen in Kanji lettering. I wanted to do that with the Aki-tamenuri writer. After a couple of weeks, they came back to me and said that their is no Kanji version of my name - Marc - but they did some research, found that the name derived from Mars, the god of war, and proposed to include "senshi" - which means "warrior" - on the pen instead. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Senshi . Since I am a lawyer, I thought this was perfect, and have taken this pen into countless negotiating sessions.

 

For the Ishime cigar, I ordered a music nib, which writes an amazing broad line.
