Lamy 2000 (50 Years Limited Edition)

Hi Guys,

Did anyone of you visit a Lamy Outlet / Store recently. I had visited this Lamy Outlet in Mumbai to get my Old Dialog 3 and Lamy 2000 (SS) serviced / cleaned.

I was pleasantly surprised to see the Limited Edition 2000. It is really amazing. Not brush finish but instead it has a finish like the Palladium Dialog 3. However, the colour has a hint of Copperish shade to it.

Only 5000 pieces are available. Its definitely more expensive than the normal 2000 (SS).

Just wanted to know your thoughts!

There was a thread awhile back about it when Lamy first released the pen.

Overall, I got the impression some people loved it and most people were disappointed. Especially with the price they were charging, it could have been more special. And I thought I saw threads about some users having discoloration or staining...

Discolouration you say... :(.

Well that's too bad... Perhaps I need to still do more research before jumping into it then.

There's two different threads in this forum you might want to look for. One is from the person whose 50th Anniversary 2000 was discolored. The other is a fan thread, containing positive experiences with the pen.

I thought the pen looked nice, but Lamy priced it way too high. As a result it didn't sell well and retailers offered incentives to clear out stock. Goulet Pens at one point ran a promotion offering a free Markrolon 2000 with purchase of a 50th Anniversary.

Found the Fan Thread, no luck with the other.

Makrolon 2000 is something that I own. I haven't faced these issues though.

The Lamy 2000 (SS) has microscratches not visible directly but if closely observed they are visible. These happen due to leaving the pen on the table surface instead of a cloth.

Here's the discoloration thread. Apparently some iron gall ink stained the pen. Someone further down in the thread says sweat from fingers reacts with the finish.

IIRC, it was overpriced for what it was. I don't think it sold too well.

It is the same Lamy 2K with a different color.

OTOH, what are they charging for it in India?

@ ErrantSmudge - Found out the thread later on and yes that's surprising to read / hear that an Ink will cause this.

@ 1nkulus - The Pen retails around INR 40K (At the Store) however with a Discount can be bought around 32K (Still thats well over $400)

@hbraerae - The Colour is Gorgeous. I held it for like 2 mins and I was already admiring the finish. It definitely carries the 2000 (SS) weight as well. I heard the store keeper mention it's a tad bit heavier than the SS version. However as what the thread suggests if sweat too leaves a mark then it's difficult. I write a lot and not just that, my palms tend to get sweaty when writing more.

To sum this:

Colour - Great

Grip - Same as 2000 (SS)

Look - Amazing

Feel - Nice

Price - Way Way Higher!

What is the price for a 2K SS?

The 50th is the same as SS with a color change.

You could ring stores in other cities to check deals.

Well to be honest apart from the colour there's not much change in the Limited Edition 2000.

The 2000 (SS) would be retailing around 29k INR.

As far as the Limited is considered, may 1K ~ 2K higher is understandable. This is almost 10K.

Besides its not Titanium. Its SS with a different Colour Quote.

Doesn't really justify the expenditure.

Also the store said they cannot change the Nib to a Fine Point.

I guess the next buy will be the MontBlanc 149 or to begin with the Pelikan M1000 Souveran.

Spoke to the Pelikan Chap and he is doing somewhat similar Pricing for the Souveran. So i'd rather buy a Pelikan M1000 instead (He has a Fine Nib as well).

The 2K SS has more heft than the MB or Pelikan IIRC. The girth of the Pelikan and MB will be similar to Dialog 3.

I assume the SS is available for INR 22K after discount and hence the difference becomes 10K.

IMO, it would be better to invest in a different brand for the sake of variety and enjoyment.

Is the M1000 priced at INR 32K or thereabout?

I would try the EF because it is a wet nib, designed for use with 4001 inks which are dry.

I was very disappointed when the pen came out. It is essentially the SS version but with a different finish and a ridiculous price tag. Should have been something special for their 50th anniversary. I already own the SS so I passed on this over priced version.

+1

IMO, they lost the plot on this one. Hopefully, something special for the 75th. ;)

Most people don't really like the pen but I picked up mine at the former US distributor's sale for around 280$ and have no complaints. Mine has an excellent EF nib. I like the color. Some minute ink stains close to the nib - hard to photograph, <1mm. Nice surface, not at all like the SS. That said, the dialog 3 is a much more interesting pen.

@ 1nkulus - Different variety is One. Besides Pelikan & MB are far more well established. Besides I have read a lot of reviews about them and none of them are negative per se.

@ VRI39C - Precisely the Point. Its a 2000 (SS) with a different finish. Doesn't make sense. I'd rather go for the SS with an EF. Already have the Black 2000 (F) and the 2000 SS (M).

@ 1nkulus - Wouldn't it be great if they can manage a Titanium Dark Grey for the 75th Anniv. That'd be nice. I still post the 2000 (SS). however with Titanium it'll weigh Half!

There is no shortage of well established brands, some just have a 'better image' than others.

IMO, Cross and Lamy CS is stellar.

The selection of large girth pens in production is fairly limited.

You can also look at Cross Peerless 125 for girth and heft.

A titanium body Lamy would be great but probably cost your first born. ;) Still hoping though...

+1 / Same price, same nib, same positive feedback.

The Store came back with a reduced Price Tag - 26.5K INR which is roughly - USD 375 (Give or take).

Somehow I dont feel it justifies the Price at all. I mean sure if Lamy decides to launch a 60th Anniv, 75th Anniv and 100th Anniv, then as a collectible it makes sense (so to speak). Given a choice i'd still buy a SS (2000) over the Amber.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
