J. Herbin Bleu De Calanque

As a huge fan of J. Herbin inks, I was thrilled to learn about five new standard inks introduced in 2018. I've got the bottles and I'll review them shortly.

New inks come in standard J. Herbin glass bottles that contain 30 ml of the writing fluid.

This was the first of the new colours I bought and I think it’s a very pretty ink. But mine looks more like the blue on the box & bottle i.e. more blue and less green. Anyway, I’m very happy with it and it looks fun in my bright pink TWSBI Eco :-)

As soon as I saw the first photo, I thought, oh, it must have been torture for visvamitra to do this review. ;)

Thanks for enduring for our sakes. Your reviews are among my favorites - even when I'm not interested in the ink. :)

A great review as usual; it's one thing to do something well and another to do it consistently.

It's interesting how I can have a similar ink, the old Lamy Turquoise, and not like, and see this review and think it's nice!

Nice review, seems very similar to the Kobe Marchais Blue and Diamine Marine.

It must have been a chore to do also knowing the OP's dislike for turquoise colors

Thank you for all the time and effort across the numerous in depth ink reviews.

I agree with you vis -- not my first choice of a color to grab. Or the 422nd either....

But thanks for the review. Reviews of inks I don't want is way better for my wallet.

and in your case, to also avoid clutter.

After 422, it is about time you were a bit selective. :P

Oh, you misunderstand. Given all the available inks out there that (I do not have near that many -- yet -- in bottles, although between bottles and samples I am probably close to 300) there are colors I'd much more likely be using. Like orange (and I think my general opinion of orange inks is probably not a secret at this point... ;)).

ROFL you took the words out of my keyboard.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Only 300, that's a relief. A bit of room left to grow... :D

OTOH, your top three orange inks please?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
