Demise Of The Refillable Sharpie Pen

The Sharpie Pen, at least as far as the refillable stainless steel model goes, is apparently discontinued. (The non-refillable models seem to be going strong.) So, I'm left with a few of these with an end date in sight, which is really a shame. The stainless steel barrels had a comfortable diameter and nice heft to them.

I got in touch with Sharpie when I saw that what few refills I could find on eBay or Amazon Marketplace were going for over $100. "Unfortunately," wrote back the CSR, "this item has been discontinued." Whether they were meant to be a promotional item with a limited lifespan, or the marketplace has forced the company to refocus its efforts on more profitable business lines, is anyone's guess, but it seems they could have at least continued making the refills for some time into the future.

Now, the only options remaining are for some third party (i.e., Monteverde) to step in and make something compatible, or else to try to retrofit an existing felt tip or rollerball refill into the housing. The Pentel Rolling Writer refills sprung to mind as a candidate, but I don't have one on hand to test the theory.

The refillable sharpie pen was doomed since the refills were more expensive and harder to find than the disposable pens.

I'm not certain what I'll do with mine once it runs dry. It would be a shame to throw it away.

+1

I lost my mine a while back, so no refill issues. :D

Pentel sells a refillable marker (and white board pens), easily available in Japan, much harder here.

Kickstarter currently has sharpie project in which the classic sharpie is the refill. Bodies in aluminum, copper, titanium.
