Yama Dori Alternative?

Karmachanic

Recommended Posts

Yes, I know. There is no substitute for Yama Dori :)

But suppose, for some bizarre reason, Sailor decided to increase the price 60% and reduce the packaging by 55%, and I wanted my Yama Dori to go a little further by using something else for daily writting, what would that something else be? Without the sheen, of course.

I've fruitlessly searched the forum and wider web, and therefore seek your input.

Thank you!

To my eyes (others will no doubt disagree), the following inks are close (from darkest to lightest shade):

* J. Herbin Emerald of Chivor

* De Atramentis Pigeon Blue

* Diamine Eau de Nil

Yama Dori, Pigeon Blue, and Eau de Nil are pictured (partially) in this image (the picture was from before I got Emerald of Chivor):

Anywho, just some ideas. Certainly, they're not gonna sheen like Yama Dori.

While talking with the proprietors at the Anderson Pens booth at this year's LA Pen Show, I brought up the Sailor price increase. I was told that Sailor would continue making the larger bottles available at the usual price in the USA market at least, and to stop believing internet rumors.

Anyway, Anderson is still selling the 50ml bottle of Yama Dori for $18:

I find Eau de Nil similar colour wise, but kinda boring shading wise. I have a bottle and will continue to use it, but it doesn't have the drama or extreme shading of YD. I don't have Pidgeon Blue. It looks promising in that there is shading. E of C is a bit too green for me. Having said that, from the reviews I've seen Noodlers Turquoise certainly has the drama and shading that I find attractive.

I've seen one review of PR Blue Suede second iteration. It too looks promising.

I've not been able to find samples of either Pidgeon Blue or Blue Suede in Eurolandia though. I might buy a bottle with enough encouragement.

Supplies of the 50ml bottles are rapidly drying up in Eurolandia. The mini bottles, however, are increasingly appearing. We'll see.

(In the US, anyway - sorry, don't know about pen shops elsewhere - but De Atramentis is a German ink, so you'd think it would be available in Europe with no trouble...)

...looks like it's one that has a second name - the little color dot is way more blue than reality (in my experience).

LizEF - For the cost of getting a sample from the US I could by a bottle from Germany, which as you pointed out is my closest source. As I'm not in a position to purchase objects I'm not sure I'll use, for now I'll scratch Taubenblau off the list.

Miel - Thanks for pointing me to fountainfedder but they have no Taubenblau sample. De Atramentis Petrol looks too green for my taste.

Good news is that I've found a samples of Blue Suede and Noodler's Turquoise.

edit to add: Ku Jaku?

Understandable, Karmachanic! I feel the same way. Hope you find either a match, or something you like as much or more. :)

Ah. The Anderson Pens staff specifically said USA. So Europe may be a different story.

I’ve definitely seen ku-jaku recommendations as subs for Emeraude de Chivor and Yama Dori.

Added to sample list!

The Writing Desk (UK) sell ink samples (including Private Reserve). Shipping costs within Europe are reasonable.

They also sell Robert Oster ink samples and one or two of his blue-greens are close matches to Yami-dori.

Thank you. TWD stocks Blue Suede. RO Tranquility also looks like it hold some promise.

Ku Jaku is lovely, but it's twice the price of YD

I'll check out Blue Suede and Tranquility for every day writing.
