Japanese notebooks. HEEEEELP

Recommended Posts

I've seen my boss use these notebooks that he buys directly in Japan. I don't know what they're called but WANT ONE! I'll try describing...

They have a black spine and a beige cover with a vertical golden line on the side, the paper is really smooth and thick...sorry I haven't told you much... anyone know what I'm talking about?

Thanks,

Dedalus

Although is might be pointing out the obvious, could you ask him what they are called and exactly where he gets them? Many people I know would be flattered to know that someone else is interested in something they are using and would like to try it themselves.

Take a deep breath. Check out The Daily Planner Apica page and all shall be well. Again.

If those aren't the Japanese notebooks you are seeking, I hate to tell you I can't remember where the others can be found. I can't even find them on my computer. :bonk: :bonk: If you check around FPN though, you'll find many other sites that carry a few other notebooks from other manufacturers and dealers.

Feel better now?

Good! :D

Spring and love arrived on a bird's sweet song. "How does that little box sound like birds and laughter?" I asked the gypsy violinist. He leaned back, pointing to his violin. "Look inside, you'll see the birdies sing to me" soft laughter in his voice. "I hear them, I can almost see them!", I shouted as his bow danced on the strings. "Ah yes" he said, "your heart is a violin." Shony Alex Braun

If these are the notebooks to which you refer, I understand your desire. I got some from ebay from vendor taylorsintherockies (not affiliated) and I love them. They come in several sizes, are very FP friendly, and from the ebay vendor, very reasonably priced. I have a tiny one I keep in my pants pocket for on the spot notes, an approx 5 X 7 one I use for sermon notes at church, and I bought some Queen of the Rodeo specials for my granddaughter who is nuts about horses. And the people who sell them on ebay are great to work with.

Do you know the manufacturer? In addition to Apica some other possibilities are Kokuyo, Showa, Midori and Tsubame. It might be quicker to ask your boss, though.

the only thing I know is that he buys them from a store in tokyo called itoya in Ginza. They are A4 notebooks unmarked, with no name on it, nothing at all. I've looked at the itoya e-store but they don't have it,

I got this info from the secretary who says he orders stacks of them in Tokyo and has them shipped to Paris... but now has found another "source" to get them. no idea about the source though...

The mistery keeps getting foggier and foggier. and I want one soooo bad.

The Apica ones resemble the ones he has but are not quite the same...his notebooks have NOTHING at all written on the cover. NOTHING.

So ASK HIM ALREADY. He'll probably be pleased someone has noticed!

ok what i did is that I bribed the secretary and compared it with my apica notebook. Different planet guys. different sport.

The pages have vertical watermark lines and big EXTRA FINE with a world logo in the watermark. The paper feels amazing. Apica seems recycled paper compared to it.

The story is that he gets it from this itoya shop in Tokyo. I still am not able to find his new source. but am on it!!!!if anyone has any idea about the notebooks let me know.

Itoya is a one of the largest and the oldest stationery retailers in Japan and they carry a lot of stuff, while they have their own products, too. It will be difficult to determine what notebook your boss uses just by the fact Itoya carries it. But the paper sounds like Tsubame os something similar to it. When I go home tonight I will search in Japanese.

Make it "woman" ;)

I have to do a search in Japanese when I get home, but I'm not sure if they export. You might need to get it from Itoya or butter up the secretary and figure fot where your boss is getting from :D

even better!!!!!!you're a woman! :D  :D  :D  :D  just kidding. Really thanks a lot. I've sent them an email to ask them whether they export or they have a distributor in Europe. The secretary now is kissing up to me when she saw the result of my search...basically the result of your work...but my description was pretty good no?

Thanks again!

I used to use it when I was a student in Japan, but love to have some myself, too. Tsubame has not changed the design of the notebook since 1947, and the notebook has a great reputation for its quality. They use paper called "foolscap" IIRC. The name doesn't sound good but it's very good. Your mention of watermark was a big clue.

I've got an Apica notebook that looks almost like it I think there night be some writing on the top part. Do you think that there might be a store brand and major brand that are the same thing?

I went to their website (translated by Google). If the translation is accurate, which I doubt "Swallow neutral paper [hurusu] use"??...anyway the A4 size is about 350 (I presume JPY) which is pretty cheap for nice paper.

Just went to The Daily Planner website and Kurt is right, they look just like that and they are imported from Japan. So Kurt, tell us what you think os the paper.

I think Tsubame is the original. That particular notebook is called "Daigaku Note" (university notebooks). It was their proprietary product name, but many other companies copied the design and they are now all called with that name (just like tissue papers are all called Kleenex). I think Tsubame ones are substantialy thicker (more pages) than others, and most others don't have watermark on the papers. I think the paper itself is probably thicker than Apica one, too.

Manuel can probably tell you, but I think Tsubame(Swallow in Japanese) paper is better quality (not that Apica is bad - I think they are quite FP friendly, too).

guys and girls,

i have an apica and in front of me i have the tsubamenote of my boss, thye're not even close in quality. once again the apica seems recycled paper compared to this one. the tsubamenote seems almost rice paper (is that a name in English?)

sorry kurt but if you would feel the paper of this notebook i'm sure you'd agree. apparently it's pretty hard to find in Tokyo as well, the new generations don't appreciate rice paper as much as the old one did. I'm young and god only knows that i'd buy a stack of 50 notebooks today if |I could.

No issue I was just offering a suggestion.

But I will say that the Apica Journal (100 pages) that looks like the picture has different paper than the standard Apica thin notebooks.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
