Shaeffer Triumph Imperial

This week I bought a Shaeffer triumph Imperial Burgundy C.T. [model 2331] It cost nearly nothing so I couldn't leave it. It took days to clear out all clots and muck. But now I inked it up. It is dry as the sahara! I can't write with it. I've looked with a loupe, the tines seem to be on the smallish side, although they are just open at the tip. I have not owned a sheaffer before and could do with some guide to get it started again. Because the nib is so different I didn't want to start straight away. I have adjusted and polished standard nibs before.

I find Sheaffer nibs characteristically juicy, one of the reasons I love the brand so this isn't normal in my experience. Is ink flowing at all? It may be worth running brass shim or a 35mm camera negative through the tines carefully in case there may be a blockage.

Some of the older Imperials and Triumphs write very dry and can have nibs with quite significant feedback. Not sure about the more recent ones but the Legacy and PFM have very wet smooth nibs

Has it been through an ultrasonic bath a couple of times? That could work.

I would be very careful with adjusting a Sheaffer inlaid nib. It's not like a standard nib that you can take it off and put it back on. Even feed removal is virtually impossible. -_-

The feed/collector unit in these is rather fine, and when clogged can be very difficult to clean without taking the nib unit apart because the schmutz gets stuck between the feed and shell. Disassembly involves removing the connector bushing, then taking out the feed and cleaning it in an ultrasonic. You have to be careful when taking the bushing out. If too hasty you can crack the shell, and you have to be careful not to get it too hot. The internal 0-ring should be replaced, and the bush secured with thread sealant on reassembly.

Thanks, Currently I don't own a sonic bath. With my very small collection I don't feel the need to invest. Although I saw some small ones on e-bay for a couple of dollars. But I do have enough of left-over 35mm slides, which I managed to wiggle through. The tines sort of popped open, so that may have done the trick. Later today the converter I ordered will arrive. I'll keep you posted.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just a sample of my green Triumph, very moist, dependable, reliable pen from back when...

Apologies for misspelling Sheaffer. Must have been written in my German phase....

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
