Pens With A Theme - Science!

I was watching the other day Neil DeGrasse Tyson geeking out about his FPs and it got me thinking. His pens were all (or mostly) astronomy-themed (obviously). What would you think are more generally science-themed pens? Biology, chemistry, mechanics... obvious or more subtle connection,.. name, historically significant FP, materials, process... any connection really!

One of my favourites is the OMAS Galileo Galilei. OMAS made a few limited edition pens in honor of scientists and explorers. The ones I remember are the Guglielmo Marconi and the Amerigo Vespucci. But more interesting might be the vintage doctor pens or engineer pens.

What would be a 'vintage engineer pen'?

I've seen pens which used an extra cavity to hide things like scales, meter sticks, calipers and this sort of things. I would consider them more a curiosity than a pen. The doctor pens usually had a thermometer hidden in them to measure fever.

To me demonstrators and light inks look like lab vials: Lamy Vista, Platinum Cool, Pelikan m205 clear. Inks: Chiku Rin, Ama Iro, Mandarin, Fuyu Gaki.

A pencil with a big eraser! (ChE)

If you want something science inspired rather than science based you should look at Nemosine. They have a few pens which are all based on some sort of science, usually physics, equation. Take the Nemosine Singularity for example, it comes in a box with the Schwartzchild Radius Equation on it which looks cool even if I don't really know the science behind it. I find that the science inspired pens of Nemosine to be a more subtle way to show a love of science.

Just a thought.

On a side note, Nemosine makes these cool, fire-blued nibs under the name reentry which could add some flair to a pen you already own, they're steel but I hear they are excellent writers.

I got email in my inbox this morning from Fahrney's, advertising a Retro 51 "Mission to Mars" LE fountain pen (apparently exclusive to Fahrney's). And for almost as much money :o, you can get a Jac Zagoory "Astronaut One Giant Step" pen holder....

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

You have to include the Visconti Divine Proportions (also known as the Golden Ratio). Beautiful pen!

Per Wikipedia: In mathematics, two quantities are in the golden ratio if their ratio is the same as the ratio of their sum to the larger of the two quantities.

Big Nemosine fan here. One word of caution about the reentry nibs, the color doesn't last.

Their nibs are super-nails and fantastic writers. Love, love, love, love them!!!!!

Given my age and profession, ALL of my pens are vintage engineer's pens.

Exclusive to Rustico is a Retro 51 Zodiac. Well, at least they are constellations, and the Stars pattern is shown. Im considering getting one.

I bought the Mission to Mars rollerball. I cant bring myself to get the fountain pen version, though I would prefer it. Retro 51 has a mechanical pencil with the periodic table. So cool!

I have some Visconti pens with space themed names, but not really looks. The Cosmos Purple Nebulus and the Millennium Arc Moonlight. They made some pens and named one Jupiter.

I think my best space themed pen is the Acme Studios Rocket Hero (Buzz Aldrin). From the pen to the case, it honors the Apollo 11 Moon landing.

Edited to add another happy Nemosine Pen buyer. The Singularity is describing the science of black holes, which we have at the center of our galaxy. I have two Singularities. The first has the 0.8 mm nib which I think I like better than the 1.1mm I got on the Rose Gold version.
