Ink Review: Diamine Orange

Today I'm reviewing Diamine Orange ink.

Diamine Orange is a saturated orange dye based ink that I think is the perfect orange. It neither leans towards the yellow end of the colour spectrum, nor the red end of the colour spectrum and is from Diamine Inks standard range.

Diamine Orange is a well named ink. It does “what it says on the jar” absolutely spot on orange. More orange than Blaze Orange and Sailor Jentle Apricot, but not quite as “retina searing” as Pumpkin.

I found it flowed well in the pens I used it with, although it felt very slightly dryer than Coral and Peach Haze. Lubrication was good, but I would have liked a little more. No shading or sheen noticed.

I haven’t had this ink in my pens for an extended period, but I know that many orange or yellow inks can have a tendency to cause “ink crud” on some pen nibs.

• Flow Rate: Good.
• Lubrication: Good. I would have preferred slightly more.
• Nib Dry-out: Not noticed.
• Start-up: Immediate.
• Saturation: Saturated ink
• Shading Potential: No shading seen.
• Sheen: None seen.
• Show-Through:
  • Rhodia Dot Pad
  • Tomoe River 52gsm
  • Oxford lined pad

• Spread / Feathering / Woolly Line: Not seen, even on Field Notes.
• Nib Creep / “Crud”: Not seen, even after over 1 week in the pen
• Staining (pen): Not seen after several days in the pen - easy clean-up with water.
• Staining (hands): Easy clean-up with bar soap.
• Clogging: Not seen. Seems unlikely.
• Water resistance: Not sold as waterproof and has no water resistance.
• Availability: Available in 80ml glass bottles, 30ml plastic bottles and cartridges from Diamine Inks web-site and many other outlets.

You're welcome. Actually the more different papers I tried it on, the better it seemed to become. It feels really well lubricated in my Hobonichi Techo and my Seven Seas Writer Journal.

Thanks for this review. I like oranges (and also the inks, har, har) but as you say, it also looks "proper". I think of all of the colours I have which are sometimes hard to describe -- in the sense of "placing" them -- it's probably orange. Yes, not too yellow, not too red etc. Greens (more turquoisy vesus more limey) are easier to span.

 

Got any Omas Orange on hand ??

You're welcome. I've reviewed Coral that was pink and Peach Haze that started to become more orange, then I got to Orange that's definitely orange. There was a sort of plan to my reviewing order: it's slightly easier to clean out pens when you gather together all of the inks that are in a similar colour range (rather than doing one orange then one blue etc)

 

I do have a new pot of Omas Orange unused somewhere. Never think about using it though. Do you want me to dig it out and see how it compares to Diamine Orange?

If you like orange ink and haven't yet tried Diamine Blaze Orange then I'd highly recommend it. I think it's better than this standard orange but I like this one too.

Been there, reviewed that, more yellow than Orange. It's one of the comparison inks that I used in this Orange review.

I've added the comparison swab for Omas Orange. It's another "proper" orange.

Good to hear (and see). Omas's looks "just" as proper as your Diamine. Interestingly, IMO both look more orange than the Blaze, which looks definitely more yellow (contrary to the finding of Uncial in Post #15).

Yes Diamine Orange and Omas Orange are a pair of "proper" oranges.

Thanks for the excellent review! Diamine Orange is one of my favorite orange inks. The early formulations were more prone to nib crud, but the more recent ones (with the black label and top) have been extremely well-behaved in my experience.
