Leather Portfolio / Notebook Case

For some things, I am very particular, very specifically, my belts (as in the thing that keep my pants closer to my waist than my ankles). My favorite belt was failing because the material was cheap, unlike the cost, so I decided to find one that would really last.

Because I was in the area, I stopped by the River Ridge Leather Co in Coshocton Ohio where I spoke with Dennis Knight

see http://www.riverridgeleather.com/index.php

Sure, I found and purchased a couple of really nice belts at a much better price than the other belts I was finding, but, I also saw these things that Dennis called a Notebook Case.

My first thought was "now that sure would be handy", but there was no way that my fountain pen was fitting into the place meant for a pen. Dennis took a look at it, looked at my fountain pens, and said "I can make one that will fit that pen"; and sure as shooting he did.

It just arrived in the mail today.... before I post some photos, let me just say that I post my photos displayed on this forum in this library on smugmug, so you can browse them if you desire (https://pitonyak.smugmug.com/Pens/). My images there are much higher resolution than the links I embed.

Lets start with how this thing looks from the front:

Yes, I had him place my initials on the front. I considered not doing this since this thing will certainly be usable longer than I will be alive.

I added a pad of Clairefontaine paper and dropped my Lamy 200 pen into the pen slot. No problem at all.

Here is a closer view of the pocket that will hold my fountain pen, and some business cards if I wanted to drop some business cards in there.

This leather is thick. Think saddle leather. portfolio_IMG_20180326_165930-M.jpg

Dennis was great to work with, and his products are excellent. To quote from his web site:

These handmade leather notebook cases are handmade of genuine, traditional vegetable-tanned leather by Dennis Knight, using only traditional leatherworking tools.

The leather used is kind of a big deal in that the tanning method actually matters, especially if I am going to have it up against my fine tools, or, in this case, my nice fountain pens.

As a reminder, he made this special for me, so, if you want one that will easily fit your fountain pen, be sure to contact him, his contact information is on his web site. I am thrilled that I can actually have one of these that will work well with my fountain pen AND it will last.

I was staring at them in his store thinking "I really like this, but my fountain pens will not easily fit there". His first comment was that it should stretch, then he took a closer look and said, well, it is a tight fit, I can make one for you that will fit, and the rest is history (so to speak).

Very nice. Thanks for sharing this. I’m going to check out his website. I love buying well-crafted useful things like belts and pen cases. and, all things being equal, I’d rather buy from a craftsperson than from a factory in China.

It's beautiful and use it well. Years ago I purchased an A4 sized softolio from levenger which continues to serve me very well. I long ago gave up on their paper though an keep a rhodia A4 lined tablet it it now.
