Video Review: Wing Sung 601

Excellent review, thanks. I have a black and silver 601. It writes smoothly and reliably. The pump mechanism and ink window also work very well. Easily my favorite Chinese pen. An incredible value and a lot of fun for $15.

Just for a slightly different take: I found his comments about the nib being a bit on the scratchy side a little amusing, given the way he holds the pen. I don't know if it's because he's videoing, and trying to get the best view, but he holds his pen at right-angles to the direction of his writing, i.e. he's writing sideways on. He also rotates the pen a fair bit anti-clockwise. Not surprising that he finds it a bit toothy, as he will be well off the small sweet-spot for such a fine nib.

Just my tuppence-worth.

Cheers,

Effrafax.

The Complete Copies of Parker 51 I think they are 100 Hero(Aeromatic) and 51 and 201 Wing Sung(Vacumatic).

Wing Sung 601 is a re-make of 102 Wing Sung with a little improvement of the structure of 201 and Medium Wing Sung.

Wing Sung 601 has a 18mm nib.

Hero 100 not really. It does not have the arrow clip and I think the section is longer, more like in Parker 61 than 51. Hero 616 is almost an identical copy of 51.

And as for this vacumatic Wing Sung, I observed this subject for some time and I think I'll pass. The idea if recreating this now obscure filling system is interesting I guess, but all the same it's the reason I don't really want this pen.

I have a vacumatic Parker 51 and this filling system is the reason I almost never use it. It's not only horribly annoying to clean, but frankly, it kinda scares me. I know I probably wouldn't be able to service it if something went wrong with it and I don't even know whether it works properly now (here's a big plus for Wing Sung's folks who thought about installing an ink window in their pen).

Then again, I guess buying this pen for the sake of maybe disassembling it and learning something about the filling system wouldn't be a bad idea...

In fact, 100 Hero is a copy of P51, 200 Hero is the copy of P61 and the Hero 100 was improved basing on 100 Hero and 200 Hero.

100 Hero: P51 seems to be 21.5mm

200 Hero: P61

Hero 100: 100 Hero and 200 Hero 19.5mm

Hero 200: P75

Hero 800: P45 (licensed by Parker, only sold in China mainland)

616 Hero/Hero 616: 571/581 Hero's Steel nib version. 19.5 mm

Those vintage 616 for export do not have arrow clip, I think it is because Parker had accused Hero for Infringement in Thailand (maybe 571 Hero, 616 is the steel nib version of 571/581 Hero. ).

During 1950s-1960s

China helped to built Vietnamese FP maker Hong Ha in Hanoi. The Vietnamese Pens I have seem to be Vietnam version of 616-Small or Vietnam version 581 Hero with steel nib.

China sold machines for 100 Hero, 581 Hero and 215 Lucky to Poland. I think Zenith-2 (Arrow Clip version) is 581 Hero mixed with 215 Lucky's bar.

China helped to built DPRK's FP maker in Pyongyang. What I had seen is P51-style but not Arrow Clip.

Ditto here , an hooded nib would inherently require the user a more discipline use on how he/she place the nib against the paper. Especially with a F nib

thank you.

the "100 Hero" Vs "Hero 100" distinction is very interesting. Is there some place where we can see some pics of these old models? a google search did not turn up anything except the modern ones.

It is an auction and the 100 Hero had been sold years ago.

It just like parker 51.

Thanks for the review. From Taobao, I see there are non-ink window versions available as well as demonstrators. I'm intrigued by the filling mechanism and look forward to picking one up before too long.

The Taobao listing is v interesting. The transparent models show a diaphraghmless vac filler. (Multi stroke filler with breather tube).

This is probably more reliable than a spotty diaphraghm based design.

Here is "one who may say this (601) is a rip off", and approaches the review of the Wing Sung 618 contrary to alanlight's more positive approach to Wing Sung's adaptations of the Parker 51.

Once again, I thought the OP's video review was a good review. I look forward to more.

The only thing I can suggest is to provide close ups while your describing those specific aspects you're doing close ups on instead of after the descriptions and impressions (but that may take more video editing, and is not a big deal), you know, like pen porn lolol.

Other than that, check out the other reviewers and see if you like what they do and incorporate it.

But I will say the OP's video review was, I felt, positive towards the 601, truthful and informative, and made me consider getting one, and I may depending on how I like the Wing Sung 618 when it arrives.

And I am curious about what descent browns you may find, as I've recieved questions about suggestions I couldn't provide besides Noodler's Walnut, which I have inked in a Jinhao x750-Goulet.Medium, and it writes lovely and deep in that pen.

Thanks for the feedback...and I agree about the close-ups, I plan on integrating them into the pen description segment as you suggest.

As far as browns, I have quite a few that I like and I hope to do videos on all (most) of them:

Birmingham Walnut Street Brown
Waterman Absolute Brown
Noodler's Golden Brown
J. Herbin Café des îles

Diamine Ancient Copper
J. Herbin Lie de Thé

Diamine Terra Cotta

... to name a few.

Back in the old days, I swore by Parker Penman Mocha... but alas it's no more.

It would be hard for any ink to supersede my Jinhao.x750.Goulet.Medium-Noodler's.Walnut combo right now, but I am open to ideas. I love the deep richness of this combo. It writes wetter, but the dryness of the ink does tame it so the line isn't too wide, and the flow is perfect for the nib I have on in. It's like one of those combos you don't want to mess with because somehow the stars aligned to have a water resistant ink write as well as my non water resistant inks. I even inked it up in a Rose Gold x750 that kind of color matches with the ink, so it's almost serendipitous *fingers crossed*.

I usually don't buy inks without trying a sample, but after VittaR's review I bought a bottle...:

... and my experience has been congruent with hers. I do have other favorites, but this is a must have in my collection.

But I will say the Birmingham Walnut Street Brown is very lovely! It reminds me a little of Black Swan in English Roses.

I've been impressed with the Birmingham inks and have a few samples of my own.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
