Montegrappa Inner Cap

Greetings all,

I am looking for a Montegrappa inner cap for a briar and sterling, of the Symphony series.

It will be the same as the basic Symphony.

I just wanted to see if any parts are out there before I end up making one. (yes, I'm lazy)

Well since no parts surfaced, I made my own.

I cant say for sure this is all original Montegrappa, I hope it's not because the assembly it's kind of a kludge.

The inner cap is polyethylene, not my favorite material for longevity or strength, The draw pin in the die was off center making the sidewall thin on one side, perhaps the reason for failure. There is a gap between the inner cap and the clip, so an aluminum spacer was used to fill the void. The assembly is screw together with a flathead screw with a washer, really!

The inner cap was always prone to unscrew, as the only radial restraint was the friction of the top of the cap.

 

 

Anyone took a Symphony cap apart and seen a similar configuration?

 

 

 

 

So when I made my replacement I used black Delrin, I made it longer, so I didn't need a spacer. I cut a slot so the clip would engage and stop rotation.

I made the sidewalls a little thicker and a proper countersunk seat for the screw.

 

 

 

 

It's a beautiful pen, and I'm glad its back in the rotation.

do the facets line up between the cap and barrel when closed? perhaps they isolated the clip and inner cap so that easy facet alignment could be carried out at the factory(but it would as easily be thrown out of alignment too). just a thought.

But your improvements are really solid, well done!

Yes, I did align them before I put the keyway in for the clip. It's those little things that one needs to pay attention to.
