Don't. Petroleum products are the primary ingredient in Vaseline. Doesn't play nice with the plastics (modern and vintage) that pens are made from. Get 100% pure silicone grease. You can get from Goulet or a dive shop. It is pretty cheap. I have two TWSBI's and just use what they send with the pen. It might not be as good as the alternative, but it works.

If you want to ruin your rubber seals, thats a good way to do it.

Like dissolves like, so petroleum based things will not fare well in vasoline. Silicone grease is what is recommended, but hey, your pen, and someone needs to help keep restorers in business.

Nano's.....like in ink and cloths, get into the blood stream and end up hanging around in your lungs forever.....not for just seven years of tar from cigarettes.

 

There was a show on that on German TV.....which often has programs that wouldn't be shown in the US due to lack of interest, and lack of interest of the industries buying advertisement time. The Germans have a TV tax that supports the 1st&2nd TV channels..................so other pure add driven channels have to match that.

 

Three or so years ago when that report came out on how unhealthy cheaper than goretex nano rain gear was.....I decided to stay in out of the rain.

I will never own nano ink either.

I cannot find much information on the toxicity of silicon grease. There are some mentions of it being carcinogenic, but nothing too specific.

 

Anyone know how careful one should be when eyedroppering with silicon grease from Goulet Pens or any other pen shop? These greases don't come with any instructions or warnings.

 

Otherwise, is there any non-harmful alternative I could use?

Stop cleaning off the old stains with your tounge. Problem solved. It's not asbestos!

I bet the nano particles in the air by diesels will kill you first.

Cheap textiles, ok, I can agree to this. But ink? May be more of a problem for the food chain.

The fact that you shouldn't use Vaseline having been established, I will say that one of the advantages of the Molykote 111 is that it is formulated to resist washing off of the seal, or piston rod. That is a consideration when it is coming in contact with ink.

 

I often see silicone grease glopped onto a seal or rod - oodles of it sitting there not serving any useful purpose. A remarkably small amount of silicone grease is sufficient to lubricate a rod or seal. I like to say that if you can see it, you're likely using too much. With exposure that little amount on occasion, I wouldn't worry about contact with it if it were toxic or a carcinogen. ...especially compared to the stuff I use for solvent welding cracks.
