Ink Review: Sailor Jentle Irori (Hearth Red)

Today I'm reviewing Sailor Jentle Irori (Hearth Red)

 

This is one of the newer inks that has been re-released into the current Jentle line-up. My sincere thanks to a kind forum member who sent me this sample to review.

 

Its a very strong, very saturated, vibrant, bright red. Occasionally it seems to look quite orange, but it definitely has pink undertones and actually isnt very orange at all.

 

The chroma test shows it to be a mixture of bright magenta pink and yellow dyes. As I have samples of both inks, I also chroma tested Sailor Kingdom Note Nipponia Nipon, and both chroma tests came out identical.

 

I filled a converter in a Parker Sonnet with 18ct gold medium nib. I also swapped that converter full into a spare 18ct gold fine nib. When not filling through the nib, it took a while to get it started after I swapped the converter over.

• Flow Rate: Very good. Quite wet in the pen & paper combinations I used.
• Lubrication: Very good and smooth with both nibs on several different papers
• Nib Dry-out: Not noticed in normal use.
• Start-up: Immediate after filling through the nib. Hesitant when not filled through the nib.
• Saturation: Very saturated.
• Shading Potential: A little shading seen.
• Sheen: Some reviews show this ink has gold sheen, but it didnt show up on my paper.
• Show-Through:
  • Tomoe River 68gsm.
  • Banner generic 80 & 90gsm printer papers & lined pads.
  • Field Notes
  • Tom Bihn Lined
  • Silvine Paper
  • Clairefontaine Crokbook
  • Sainsburys Moleskine Clone
• Spread / Feathering / Woolly Line: Only a little seen on Field Notes.
• Nib Creep / Crud: Not seen, even after over 1 week in the pen
• Staining (pen): Not seen inside the converter after flushing with soapy water.
• Staining (hands): Stained my hands and they needed washing with Lava soap to remove Irori from my fingers.
• Clogging: Not seen. Seems unlikely.
• Water resistance: Not sold as waterproof and not at all water resistant
• Availability: Available from Sailor stockists and many other online outlets.

You're welcome. Yes it's very like the new Montblanc Legend of Zodiacs Red Dog only it's a bit more saturated.

 

I used the Montblanc ink as one of my comparison inks because I thought exactly the same as you did.

You're welcome. Yes it's close to several similar Diamine red inks, Tulip, Poppy, Wild Strawberry (obviously a plant theme going on there )

 

It showed through on the 68gsm Tomoe River and took quite a long time to dry. I will try it in my Seven Seas Writer Journal too. But I suspect that will also be a good paper to see sheen on.

Nice review! This is the ink I use to edit my (and other's) manuscripts. I use it very often - if my hands are stained, Irori probably is the ink responsible for it.

I've seen you also have 'The Red Shirt', and prefer that red ink. I think I would probably like that more too.

Great review - the skin staining is quite bad, the quicks of my nails were bright pink for a couple of days... I find sheening very paper dependent, but it can shade as much as Oku Yama on some papers. The colour looses a little ferocity after a week or so in a pen

You're welcome. I had exactly the same staining with a patch on the side of my middle finger, and my thumb. Both were still visible after I had showered and washed my hair!

 

It's good to know it loses a little of it's bright ferocity after a week or so. That would improve it for me.

I think it's got a lot in common with levenger cardinal red - I didn't notice any sheen on that ink, but I've seen pictures with INSANE gold sheen. So I left it for a few days and looked at it again, and it actually develops a gold sheen as it ages.

 

Take a look back at your notes with this in a few days and let us know if it starts to sheen

I also have Levenger Cardinal Red and P.I. Momiji that I thought are both meant to exhibit sheen, so I will check out those two inks as well.
