Waterman Horseshoe Nib

Recommended Posts

I received this Waterman 4 horseshoe nib with a fountain pen lot. It is is a rather ordinary non-stepped section BCHR #14, with globe logo, which seems to be incorrect/late for the nib from what I can tell trying to research on line.

There is an odd shaped crack near the vent. Tipping is intact.

Can this nib be correct in this pen? If not, it seems a shame for it not to get married to the correct pen.....

Lucky you !!

This is a very early Waterman nib (made before the "star" ones).

Very scarce of course ...

Congrats !

Very interesting and rare to see.

Though I just wonder if it has been reworked at some point in time.

The nib looks to have been bent and straightened further towards the point.

It would be very good though I doubt you will to show the inside surface.

I don't mind knocking it out and taking other pictures if the group would find that valuable.

Wow, very nice. Some day I want to find one of these. Is this from the early times of Watermans first generation?

Too bad about the crack. But, what a find

The rarity of the nib would justify investing in laser welding, in my opinion. Minuskin could do that or FP nibs in Europe could do it for about $50 ish. But, I would do it once I found the right pen.

Its easier to find a pen from the 1890s to pair with this nib, than to find this nib on a pen from the 1890s. This is from my limited experience.

And, lucky you!

I completely agree. I feel that it would be a shame to not have the crack welded. I've had several nibs welded by Greg Minuskin and I was very happy with the outcome

Also, I'm curious about the feed? Is it period correct? The nib seems very far out

Is it a narrow feed?

greg

Don't feel bad. I'm old; I'm meh about most things.

The feed and pen were later cone cap waterman 14 parts. The nib was out really far and the pen came to me without a cap. It just looks like a size mismatched, as well as period mismatched nib put into that capless pen.

It alredy went to a new home of someone With an interest in early Waterman!

Expect about $120-130 for greg minuskin to fix that beauty right up. He's fixed a breather crack for me that other nibmeisters called terminal.

Selling a boatload of restored, fairly rare, vintage Japanese gold nib pens, click here to see (more added as I finish restoring them)

I’m sorry to resurrect a dead thread, but I want to point out that this and the star nib were offered at the same time. See images of the nibs in the 1897 and 1898 catalogs at https://pencollectorsofamerica.org/reference-library/waterman/

Thank you for doing so......

The Waterman Horseshoe and Star nibs are  such an important part of fountain pen history!!
