You might try Graf von Faber Castel Carbon Black, if their Deep Sea Green is any indication. That has a 'flat', non-shiny appearance (though I would describe it as creamy-looking), which is what I take you to mean by matte. Here's Mafia Geek's review:

You can get a 6-pack of cartridges for $5.40/free shipping from scribe.market in Bulgaria on ebay (not affiliated) to try it out. It's definitely on the expensive side for inks but Vanness has the 75ml bottles for $30, that's the lowest price I've found.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

Hi 8,

Lamy Black and J. Herbin Pearle Noire had no sheen and a dead flat look. Waterman had slight traces of luster here and there. Quink Black had some; Aurora and Monteverde had the most.

Hope this helps; be well and enjoy life. :)

Montblanc's Ultra Black. was the mattest I found out of these 12 blacks:

1. Aurora

2. Herbin Perle Noire
3. Montblanc Mystery Black
4. Noodler's Black
5. Noodler's Heart of Darkness
6. Noodler's Old Manhattan
7. Pelikan Black 4001
8. Private Reserve Invincible Black
9. Sailor Kiwa-Guro
10. Visconti
11. Montblanc Ultra Black

12. Montblanc Permanent Black

I'll try to get around today replacing all of the images in my review of it which Botophucket wrecked up.

Of the above list, which would you say is closest to MB Ultra Black? I love UB, but don't know what I will do when I exhaust my current supply.

The De Atramentis document inks are very matte. If you want, I could do a swab of document black later today on your choice of one of the following papers, and post a photo:

  • 68g Tomoe River (Hippo Noto)
  • Rhodia dot pad
  • Rhodia premium, lined
  • Clairefontaine (french ruled)
  • Black n' Red
  • Mnemosyne
  • 20 lb crappy copy paper
  • 24 lb HP LaserJet paper
  • cheap lined notebook

I think that's what I've got lying around.

Would love a swab photo on cheap mined notebook and 24lb LaserJet paper as those are most common in my office. Thank you so much for offering

Here they are. The papers are HP 24lb LaserJet paper (this is good paper, not the kind offices buy); 20lb copy paper (this is what offices stock); a cheapo lined notebook. IMO, it looks a little more brown on the HP paper than the photo shows - closer to the color on the lined notebook. The nib was a Jinhao x750 M nib, dipped. ETA: All very matte-looking here.

...and the back, so you can see bleed (barely even any show on the HP, as expected):

Platinum Carbon Black is richly charcoal, even on Rhodia.

Thank you so much. Really gives me a good idea of how they look and perform. I'll stock my office with the laser paper this week and inks should arrive shortly thereafter. Thanks again

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
