Waterman Gentleman

Hi, Folks!

This is a Waterman Gentleman Sterling Silver Godron c1983-1997. The cap, barrel and section are all hallmarked .925 sterling silver with a deeply cut godron pattern engraved. The Gentleman was the top of the line model with a simple tapered cylinder design and made in a variety of metal and laquer finishes. The clip was borrowed from the C. F. and that style has become a Waterman trademark. Gentleman pens have sections that match the cap and barrel, unusual on metal pens today with interchangeable sections. The cap top and barrel end cap have a black lacquer circle, with the cap having a Waterman 'W' logo in the center. This 5 9/16 inch long pen has the Ideal 18 karat gold nib.

I only have the one Gentleman and was wondering if we could see more of these less talked about high quality pens.
Thanks!

Nice picture of a flawless pen !

This is a Waterman Gentleman Sterling Silver Godron c1974-1997.

I'm really more doubtful about the production dates you are mentionning : the Gentleman is a pen of the mid 1980's, not before !

Where did you get this information ?

The dates came from Fountain Pens of the World.

That's not the same model !

The "Gentleman" produced in the 1970's was designed by Alain Carré and had a different shape (here on the left) :

Ok - what year was the model first offered?

I have two of these, both burgundy-colored lacquer. (I don't know the official name of the color.) One was my first fountain pen, given to me by my late husband in the mid-1990s, and still seeing regular use. The other was given to me by my boss after she inadvertently scratched the first one.

Although I now have quite a few other pens, both vintage and modern, I find that my Waterman Gentleman fine point pens are the best for showcasing inks. They are wet enough for luxurious writing but not so wet as to make darker or more saturated inks look close to black.

Now that autumn has come, I am switching to the inks I use at this time of year, and I think that tonight I will ink one of Gentleman pens with Poussiere de Lune.

I'm unsure of the exact date, but 1983 could be the correct answer.

I'm going to ckeck this point.

My 1988 catalogue shows 3 lacquer models, Bordeaux, Black and Blue plus the Sterling Silver Straight Flute or Linea Godron as some refer it as..

Another, undated, catalogue shows the gold plated model Linea Godron.

I have also seen them with Green lacquer, Silver Barleycorn and Gold Barlycorn finish.

Then there was a mottled (Tortoise) brown lacquer and the rare Maki-E lacquer.

Penni has them from 1985 to 90.

Mottled pen,

Yes, I do confirm (thanks to André Mora ! :) ) that the Gentleman was launched in 1983 (with the Man 100) and was discontinued at the end of the 1990's.

Hi,

Are any of you who own and use Waterman Gentlemans having trouble with the, in a lot of instances, 35 plus year old plastic inside the nib sections?

And who do you prefer to go to for repairs these days?

Thanks !

Ben

I have two such pens, and they still work well. I just inked one up this morning.

If you could be more precise about your location (and possibly what you mean by trouble with the plastic), I'm sure someone on the board can guide you toward the closest repair resource.

Hello E Newton,

I haven’t been posting here much lately, (Time, time, time!) so I apologize!

I am in the Birmingham, AL vicinity.

I’d have to dig out repair info from John Motishaw from a few years ago, for Silver Godrun repair, cracked parts comes to mind. A couple of other Gentleman were cannabalized I recall.

Where to send vintage Watermans for assorted repairs is most likely best decided by best option for the fix regardless of where, wouldn’t you think?

Thanks!

Ben

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
