Please Don't Put Photos On Photobucket

Alas, there have been missing photos on FPN for years. Photobucket just made a LOT go missing all at once -- including images in recent posts people were reading. It also made the missing image VERY conspicuous with a big, black image of its own. (I think that's advertising and they should have to pay FPN for each such image posted;-)

Which FPN upload function are we talking about? My experience was that I uploaded images for a while through a rather tortuous procedure. Then that stopped working but the error message was not very helpful about what to do about it. Eventually I figured out there was a limit on the total space you could use. Them someone (Amberlea?) told me about another tortuous procedure using FPN resources but with no limit. So I learned that and used it for a while but it all seemed way to complicated. My idea of "simple" is that when you get to the point in composing a post that you want a picture you drag it from your file manager and drop it right where you want it in the message (not always at the bottom).

On legalities I do not know if FPN has a lien on your uploaded photos. If you want to copyright your photos you should include a copyright notice in each. General copyright law is that if you "publish" something without doing that it is likely to end up in the public domain. One of my professors in graduate school went to a workshop and was given handouts including material she had created for handouts at her own workshops. She did not copyright them. The presenters had assembled a bunch of stuff from various sources and then copyrighted the whole package, so it looked like she now had to get permission from the copyright holders to distribute her own materials.

I have used the picture upload process here often, and found it much easier if I took pics on my tablet, and uploaded them to FPN from the tablet. The pics seemed to stay within the approved size range. They uploaded easily. The tablet took better pictures than my digital or film cameras.

Of course, I was an IT manager. I started work as an assembly language programmer and system programmer. I ended up as a database administrator and Unix nutcase.

Wow! They're "only" charging $400 annually for a service hundreds of other hosts offer for free. What is wrong with them?

It really is a shame that they ruined the discussions of thousands and thousands of websites by becoming almost unfathomably greedy.

Greed, the pervasive lubricant of business.

There must be some usage limit, or something, that triggers that image cutoff and demand for $400. I always upload images to FPN now, but some of my old posts have images hosted by Photobucket, and you can still see them.

And this only applies to the U.S.. Now think how many individual countries and copyright laws there are. :yikes:

I can't see any reason why they should supply freebies to everyone forever. They decided to stop giving things away and focus on their paying customers, many of whom are already paying the $400 anyway. But I think they handled it very poorly. They could have given more notice, offered an interim $4 a month service, and not plastered their ads all over everyone else's website.

I've been trying to delete all my photos on photobucket. I'm glad I saved them.....as it is now the site won't allow me to delete the remainder of my photos. It's almost like they're being held hostage.........

I don't like it when my mind turns to such things, (positive gentle-teaching based Plan B-Z by preference), but if a few large entities, that once had valuable photo studies now compromised by what are now Squares advertising Plot-0-bucket, were to send Plot-0-bucket bills for every single square of that free advertising?

Luckily I wasn't too long in this forum when it happened. So I just reposted the few pictures I put here with Photobucket.

I get that they can't do freebies forever. But like you said... going from being a free service to costing $400/yr and removing everything shown externally and then replacing them with an ad is absolutely absurd. They deserve any and all criticism that comes their way for making such an awful decision.

Even if I were a paying member, I would reconsider using their services after this display of such poor business practices.

I tried to download my albums, as their site promises it would be so easy, but it doesn't work. How convenient. Something "doesn't click". :roller1:

Luckily I store all my originals. But I just would like to have the lbums in order. I will delete my account soon.

I feel seriously sr wd.

There is a load of work from me published here all via Photobucket.

What must I do to re-link my photo's easily.

Some here say use the upload function of FPN but as far as I know max memory is only 200MB

It was an ad based model - they sold ads and made money when we loaded up pictures that people viewed. Frankly it was an abomination - the slowest and crappiest photo sharing site out there IMO and I say good riddance to it!

No, it's actually 200 MB per image. Not sure what the max is with the Upload feature, but I'm sure that Wim or one of the Moderators will be able to tell you that.

I've been told that the total upload is unlimited.

Now, I'm one of the first to say the upload feature is not perfect (can't delete or rename), but it is very convenient and as long as you name your pictures well, and limit their size before uploading, it works quite well from a computer. You can upload from a device, but at least on an iOS device you can't rename your pictures, you'll need a separate app for resizing, (I use Photogene), and you can't copy the link to paste into a post from the popup window. The latter is the only really frustrating aspect of how the Upload window works. I may upload from my iPad, but I have to go onto a computer to write my post and paste the link into it.

I haven't been able to upload images to FPN for months. The message I get is:

"You can upload up to Uploading is not allowed of files "

So it seems there is a limit to what FPN allows you to upload.
