Jinhao Cartridges - International Or Not!

Has anybody else tried Jinhao's supposed 'international' fit cartridges? I find that they are far too loose. They fit in the feed tube ok but literally drop right out. I am nt even sure they fit well in a Jinhao pen. I shall try tomorrow as I have a lot of Jinhao pens knocking around. I will say that the ink is rather nice though. I found this out after stuffing some kitchen roll (small pellet) down the barrel of the pen I tried one in just to make sure it pushed into place. A biro spring would be better of course.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

I am in China and the Hero cartridge system is king. Most of the Chinese pens I have bought use these cartridges. They are longer and have a wider hole. Some of the Jinhao pens I have bought here take the Hero cartridges, some take the standard International cartridges.

Is your cartridge the same length as normal international ones?

Hi basterma thank you for your reply. These Jinhao cartridges are a strange in between size. They are longer and slightly slimmer than standard mini international cartridges yet slightly shorter than the original long length cart's.

I found one my Jinhao X450 fountain pens last night and tried one of these cart's in it. It does fit and is nice and snug. However, it seems that it only fits this way on the inner tube/feed part. There is no seal to the outside of the feed section. I'm not to sure how describe this but looking into where the cart fits into the nib section I can see space on the outer section of the cartridge. Normally I would expect a cartridge to fit on both the feed tube and the section part of the nib feed.

My next step is to try these cartridges on other pens that normally take 'international' cart's.

As for Hero cartridges. I have not got any of these but I shall certainly look out for them. I do have a few Hero fountain pens and as far as I am aware all of mine do take international size cart's.

Someone on FPN did a "feature" on the various different Jinhao labelled cartridges.

I have three of them and they differ in length as well as size of the opening so they are anything but standard. They do seem to work OK in the Jinhao pens though.

I only have the Hero 028 cartridges and I struggle to puncture them on any fountain pen. Once punctured they don't stay on so have to put a small spring into the barrel to hold them in place.

Per the OP, I find the Jinhao blue a nice easy ink but the black extremely dry so much so that I have given up using it as a cartridge.

Shame about their sizing being all over the place :( I genuinely like the black ink. I have started to search for both Jinhao and Hero ink here in the UK. It seems that I may not have much luck in getting either in bottled format :( Which would now have to be my preferred option as I am dissuaded from trying other (Jinhao or Hero) cartridges in case they do not fit my pens.

I have yet to see Jinhao labelled bottled ink anywhere.

Hero bottled ink is readily available on eBay at most reasonable prices usually with free shipping.

The problem I have with Hero bottled ink is that the caps tend to be loose so that neither I nor the post office are happy.

Jinhao cartridges are so cheap that it really doesn't hurt to get some to try. The black cartridges don't seem to work for me in that the ink is very dry. The ink itself it quite nice and I now extract it from the cartridges with a syringe (I ended up with a lot of black when I ordered blue) and use it in an eyedroppered 992. Being so dry it solved the burping problem.

The Hero bottled ink that I have found is on a par with Parker Quink price wise. I may well get a bottle though I haven't yet tried it (Hero brand) as yet. I hav to admit I didn't think the Jinhao cartridge ink was particularly dry. I tend to like a wetter ink but I have a couple of pens that are problematic so may try it in them.

sounds like the daiso cartridges. The pens take the regular international shorts but the Daiso ones are slimmer and slide right out

Officially NO .. some older Jinhao use the wide throat std which is basically Parker / Aurora / Lamy / Hero ( old type ) and current ones almost always use the ( Chinese ) de facto Hero 2.6mm throat standard where Int'l is more like 2.4mm ( tough I've encounter Int'l that are definitely wider and narrower. with only 0.2mm in difference, and considering there's some give in cartridges and he material. Some intl cartridge might just work out. I have success in using some J. Herbin carts in Hero pens but this would not be a guarantee.
