Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

They are not quite complete, but I was able to recently scrounge up the correct parts to almost rebuild several Vac OS and Max Pens. It is amazing how long it takes to find the correct parts for each model and size. The various diameters are partly due to shrinkage, but probably due to Parker’s quality control.

Here is my NOS Parker Vac. Says 53 on the nib, which is flexible (surprisingly, it is a USA pen). Received it in a trade/bought last year from someone with quite the predilection for flexible vacs. However, I can't bring myself to ink it so I will probably be letting it go soon. I wanted to share this here so I can admire it in the future too when I let it go.

I must also ask a question here- I remember some vacs have the pattern all around the barrel, but I'm blanking on what the name for those are.

(previously posted elsewhere but I don’t think I’ve put it here before)

1941 Parker Vacumatic Jr Double Jewel in Silver Pearl
The pen and pencil are engraved with the same name (David Russell), and it matches the initials on the pen case
The leather zip up folio was included with the sale and is believed to have belonged to the same RCAF member
The paper is a replica of an Airgraph (the UK/Commonwealth version of American V-Mail)

Per Ardua Ad Astra

restoring vintage ads is one of the things I do when I'm bored.

My favourite thread of all.

I became a Vacumatic hunter after seeing the immaculate photographs of a former FPNer, most  of my collection was sold on around 2015 but I kept hold of the set bought by my father in the 1940s which had the stiff Vac nib swapped out to a more interesting Duofold nib by Parker at the Festival of Britain in 1951.

I love vacs. Sadly I have only managed to get silver and brown ones so far 😕 but they’re still gorgeous pens.

The Vac that is often overlooked as we search for the deep reds, greens and blues is the black Vac, a handsome pen and often with very good clarity.

If you ever see David Shepherd book on the Vacumatic it is worth buying.

Sold out in many places and attracting a near 5 fold increase on the original price on ebay. A heavy weight coffee table book in every sense of the word.

The blacks are nice. But are honestly last on my list. Not that i don’t think they are great. I just want the others more.

regarding the book: oh. Yes. I’m aware of it. I would love a copy. (I got excited for a second when you posted the link…) I have the “51” book. It’s great.

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.
    • Ceilidh
Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
