Parker 45 Nibs

Hi. i always wanted a fine italic nib ( "C") for my parker 45. And i finally managed to get one from ebay. That one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/PARKER-45-NIB-ASSMBLY-FOR-FOUNTAIN-PEN-/352152062687?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&nma=true&si=F1p2PSykqsE%252BhwmcmftQ5d%252FSjGk%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

The retailer did not know if the nib was steel or gold. Did parker produced these kind of nibs in steel and gold or only in gold? Thanks!

I have seen the exotic/unusual P45 nibs only in gold. Not sure if the steel nibs came in sizes other than X (EF), F, M and B.

I only have an English P-45 and it's in 14 C gold M. Regular flex in they had to compete with Swan....not an US nail. Rolled gold cap, black body.

P 45 nibs some of the very best I've experienced. Good score!

How can you be so sure? is there any other way to regognize it rather than looking at the engravings on the nib?

Some of the steel P45 nibs were gold plated, most were not. Most of the oblique and italic types were made in both metals. In my (somewhat limited) experience, the writing qualities of the P45 steel and gold nibs are very similar.

The silvery tipping says it all. Had it been gold plated the tipping would have also looked gold colored.

You wouldn't find the regular flex and/or semi flex in the 45 steel nibs. All the flexi 45 nibs are the ones that are gold and as BO BO said only the English made gold 45 nibs have a degree of flex. The USA made gold nibs are nails.

And there are design variations in the 45 gold nibs. Slit reacing the breather hole. Slit half way through. Keyhole somewhere in the slit on one side (beside the breather hole). Various size cuts on the back of the nibs. :)

Here are a few 45 gold nibs.

And there are two types of collectors inside the P45 nib section. One is to be threaded inside and the other is press fitted and shellaced. I have noticed that the performance of pens that came with the clear press fit collectors are always better. These are kind of P51/P61 like collectors and have longer finned area as compared to the black threaded one. Here are the two (on the right) alongwith (an early production thin feed) P75 collector (on the left) that is more refined and longer and, hence, the better performance of the 75 despite its open nib as opposed to the P51 hooded nib.

That's a nice looking nib you got there! I was just finally able to get off Ebay a Parker 45 with an oblique broad italic nib from the UK and it's great. Lovely semi-flex nib that gives some real character to my writing. Enjoy the nib!

The nib arrived today. UNUSED condition! It is indeed a 14k nib. I put it to my parker 45 flighter. It is delight to use and feels exotic.
