4) Because you can see the ink level in the pen

That’s one of the unique things on a 61. I could be wrong, but the ink is “captured” within the filler. There is no ink level to see and no mechanical parts to see move. There is no difference than just unscrewing the barrel.

All marketing.

I wonder if there are ballpoint demonstrators? 😂😂😂

ok back to 51’s…

As a matter of fact, Parker made Jotter Demonstrators.
(And a number on modern BPs are made with transparent bodies (I have a Sheaffer Balance II red demo) or cutaway overlays over clear barrels!)

The only reason is marketing.

That is the reason for manufacturing any pen, indeed any consumer product.

That’s interesting. The patent shows lines at that location, but doesn’t call it out unlike all the other parts. I will have to ask around.

Back to 51’s…

I don’t know the history of that particular “Cranberry” 51, but 1st Generation 51’s don’t have the additional banding behind the clutch ring. It may be a prototype. The cranberry-colored pens I could find have smooth barrels.

The additional banding is problematic to install and it is located where a user would hold the pen when writing, which would put it in a very uncommon location on a Parker pen, since it would be subject to additional wear. A fully recessed band would reduce the section of the barrel and potentially weaker the barrel.

Outside of prototypes, I am

only aware of 51 wedding band and several other raised band caps that have material protruding beyond the surrounding material. I would be interested if there were more.

Just looking at Vacumatics and later pens, it seems Parker was very conscious of mass production and they didn’t add decoration to a pen, unless it helped in the durability of the pen, or was part of the manufacturing process. Their deigns took advantage of the manufacturing process. (The “tapered” hood is another example. I took calipers to a hood and I think the cross section of the hood is still a perfect circle, although it appears to be ovoid in profile. It can be made easily on a lathe-type machine. The arrow emblem on the 61 hood is another).

They really took “less is more” and “form follows function”

to heart. That said they still made very attractive pens in timeless styles.

$.02.

I haven’t counted but I quit trying to keep up with Mitto and his legion.

Ah, but this is because @mitto is a Time Traveller who has been sent back from a post-apocalyptic future.
He has been sent back in order to secure (and hide) a supply of the world's most-wanted fountain pen, so that the people who are attempting to re-build civilisation will be able to communicate with each other.

It is known ;)

You only need to get to 1800 pens and you will catch up with him.

My wife is giving me too much grief about 400 total pens and “why do I need that many of the same pen (51) anyway?”

Yes, we just got back from Atlanta Pen Show and we are talking about skipping the Triangle show this year.

Parker 51 in plum colour is a hard pen to find, but it is available in the new edition that the company is offering. Are both pens similar in colour, or is there a difference among them colour-wise?

The vintage Plum is absolutely beautiful to my eye, but difficult to see if not in good light. The new version is very obviously Plum, but not the same shade.

Agreed.

I don't think the new version is a particularly bad effort, though, all things considered.

I traded my NOS away, but I know Someguy can hook you up with a Plum 51 for a fair price.

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.
    • Ceilidh
Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
