Some great suggestions on this thread. I have a pen on order from Romulous which I am rather excited about.

I also have a pen from John Twiss at Twiss Pens in the UK ( a brilliant canary yellow cigar shape made to my specification).

My last custom pen was the 2017 limited edition from Herbert Pen Company who are also definitely worth a look.

Kiilk pen studio have done some posts on this forum, I do not own one of their pens - yet - but I am usually impressed with the pens they photograph.

Finally, you might want to take a teeny peak at Oldwin pens. They are the creme de la creme of custom cigar shaped pens IMHO, i think they are outside your ideal budget, so it may be inspirational or just a tease :)

Did you have trouble using thr link in the post immediately before yours?

You can just Google Shawn Newton Pens to get his site, if nothing else.

He is an independent pen maker, and may be put of your budget. I suggest saving up more to get what you want.

If you want less blah, blah, blah and more pictures, follow me on Instagram!

There are many good independent pen makers. I am partial to Brian Gray of Edison Pens, myself. Brian has made several pens for me. His prices for custom pens are around $200-$250. Right now, I'm still waiting on a special order in which Brian made the pen (a desk pen) which was then sent out to Ernest Shin for a custom urushi finish. This pen is way outside your specified range, but I'm certain it will be gorgeous when I finally get it.

That sounds like it will be a spectacular pen - hope you can post pictures in due course :)

In due course, I hope I may as well.

I think any other pictures of pens I've posted in the past are likely gone now, as I removed my pictures from photobucket. I've yet to really get them rehosted on another site.

Ahhhh, I too am waiting on a special order Edison Extended Length Mina getting a custom urushi make-i finish from Ernest. The wait is getting difficult as the pen gets closer to completion; coming up on 23 months, but it will be well worth the wait.

Best wishes on your pen.

I am also waiting on a custom pen from Shawn Newton, an Ebonite Orville custom fit to a vintage Diamond Medal #8 nib that needed a new pen body. Shawn, like Brian and Ernest (see above) is easy to work with and most accommodating. The only problem is a long lead time; indicative of great work and high demand.

If you have a tight budget, custom pens with a steel nib might fit well... Some custom makers have those pens in stock and they are often around $200.

If you do not wish to order pens in stock, yes, there will be a long wait.

I have an order through Renée at Scriptorium and the wait will be 8 months (will come my way around November). It will be a perfect pen because I chose all of the materials and shape of the pen though.

At SF pen show, I am getting a pen from Shawn Newton. Usually it is one year wait on his pens, so it is a great deal for me to get one on site :)

I have communicated with Renée and Shawn and they are very accomodating and friendly :D

I have 3 pens custom made by Renée Meeks at Scriptorium Pens and can't recommend her highly enough. Her quality and artistic eye are outstanding and her prices reasonable IMO. I currently have two more on order to give as Christmas presents. You can't go wrong with Renée...the most outstanding pen turner currently working, in my opinion. Highly recommend.

This is all great information! Thank you all!

I lot to digest. (So far, I am leaning towards a classic cigar shape...)

Check this one out!!! It's one of Jonathon Brooks' latest. It's a classic cigar shaped pen, made from ebonite and urushi lacquered (he does his own urushi work).

I just wish the custom pen makers would favor Bock nibs, I don't really like the shape of the Jowo nibs.

Shawn Newton uses Bock (maybe uses both). The one I have has a black Bock EF nib.

Yes, Shawn has used a titanium bock nib ground to architect nib for me :)

He uses both Jowo and Bock depending on what your preference is.

I know that Renée is open to using nibs other than JoWo nibs. She has also used Pelican nib units and is using a Carter nib for my next pen. I'm not sure if you would need to furnish your own Bock but I have a feeling that you could get a Bock on one of her pens.

My favorite handmade pen maker is the Kanilea Pen Co. http://kanileapenco.com/. They make bright, vibrant pens with a Hawaiian theme. The models do not have a lot of furniture giving them a simple, elegant look despite the bright colors. I have two, the lava pen and the sun pen, and love them both.

I plan to live forever. So far, so good.
