Guten Tag From Texas

Hello,

I have been lurking here for a while and thought I should register and introduce myself.

My name is Florian, I am a German currently living in Texas. As a German kid in elementary school I had the privilege to learn how to write with a blue Pelikano fountain pen. They were not the most sturdy pens, and unfortunately I do not have mine any more. Luckily, I found a "new old stock" one on Ebay, which brought back lots of memories.

Since I grew up using a fountain pen, and seeing my mother using one, it kind of stuck with me. It seems I always had a fountain pen around, mainly Pelikan and MB. I recently developed an interest in some of the Japanese pens. Overall I would say I am more of a daily user than a collector - at least so far.

The community here seems great and I intend to get to know you guys and hopefully make some friends along the way. :)

Welcome to our little corner of the universe from a pen user in San Diego.

Where do you live in Texas, and what is your German hometown? I'm curious because I've visited Texas some and have family living there. Enough generations back, my ancestry goes to Germany.

There are lots of friendly people here, lots to learn, and if you ask for help I bet you'll find some great folks who offer lots of help like I have.

But this place can also be enabling. I bought a desk pen set on eBay because of finding a thread with photos. No regrets but just saying....

Florian: welcome to FPN! ah... Germany... I love Germany as I visited for work several times! culture wise, so different from Texas, isn't it? I'm originally from Montreal, Canada, and later in life moved to Paris, then London, then Berkeley, CA, to move to Doha (Middle East) and back to Berkeley! Would love to hear about your experience moving around!

Please share your experience with pens, paper and inks with us! it's always great to hear other users' perspective!

Welcome, CupTea !

I am not German, and I don't live in Texas. I had an uncle, by marriage, who spoke German. He taught me "Lily Marlene" and some friendly phrases. Fifty years, and I haven't finished the gift copy of "Faust".

My first fountain pen was a Sheaffer School Pen. I have a couple in my collection. Fond memories.

I have a collection of daily-use fountain pens. (Fountain pens are intended to be used.)

Write with joy.

Auf freiem Grund mit freiem Volke stehn.
Zum Augenblicke dürft ich sagen:
Verweile doch, du bist so schön !

I am in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and originally from Berlin. What parts of Texas have you been to? I still can't get used to the summer heat around here...

François, wow that is an impressive list of places. I am jealous! I have lived so far only in Europe and the US, years ago I lived in Santa Clara for about a year, I enjoyed it very much. Yes, the culture in Texas is very different from Germany, but I am a pretty open minded person, so no problem. One thing I really miss though is walk-ability and getting around using public transportation.

As far as pens, I own Pelikans and MB's so far. I am currently looking into purchasing my first Japanese pen, as I sometimes need a finer nib than my Pelikan Fine and, well, where else to look for that than the Land of the Rising Sun. :) I use Pelikan and Iroshizuku inks (the latter is a little wet for my Pelikans though) and have some MB Royal Blue on the way.

I love Iroshizukus, although they are really wet inks - I tried it with my ST Dupont, my favorite fountain pen up to now. I have not yet tried the MB Royal Blue which have a lot of supporters and favorable reviews.

I've been to Dallas/Fort Worth area and San Antonio. The heat is part of what I didn't like when visiting. My brother and family are in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, but as far as I know none of them use fountain pens. I have two brothers. My brother in Chicago uses fountain pens, and has helped me a lot along the journey.

In the late 1990s my family had a reunion meeting with family in Denmark. We flew into Frankfurt, and drove to Denmark. I wish we knew more about the family line that would have been in Germany, I've searched my last name and found a hit for Mecklinburh/Vor Pommern.

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.
    • Ceilidh
Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
