Leuchtturm 1917 Buzz

Lots of promotion again forLeuchtturn - -- the note books and Bullet list books. I'm afraid I haven't ordered anything from this manufacturer because of varying reports on the paper. Namely the show thru.

Perhaps I'm wrong. But any reviews on the paper is hit and miss. Has this changed? Have they addressed the problem of bleed thru. Not wishing to rain on any suppliers parade -- please correct me if I'm wrong.

The bleedthrough is not bad if you use a fine nibbed pen and if the ink is not saturated, for example avoid Diamine and a few others.

This is a pity because the notebooks are well designed and well made, cleverly thought out.

The only Leuchturm I use is a weekly planner, for my auto log mostly. With an occasional exception for special notes, I mostly only use a TWSBI Diamond 580, F, with Diamine Monaco Red, in these books. This does not show through and works well for my limited purposes.

I have considered trying the notebooks, but (a) I fear the paper will not be well suited to denser writing with a variety of pens, nibs, and inks, and ( b ) I have way more notebooks and journals than I am ever going to use, much less fill, in my lifetime.

Sort of off subject, but pertinent to me, Leuchturm has two layouts for weekly planners: One has all the days of the week on the left hand page, and just lots of room for notes, etc., on the right hand page. The other has Mon - Wed on the left and Thu - Sun on the right, with Sat & Sun sharing the same size space that each of the weekdays has to itself. I prefer, and only will buy and use, the latter, but it is harder to find.

I just started one and it's my first Leuchtturm... I'm using an M800 with Iroshizuku inks so a pretty wet combination. There is definitely some show through but since I write recto only it's not an issue. It's also my first dot grid so we'll see how I feel as I use it more...

Personally I've only had good experiences with Leuchtturm. Far better than Moleskine. I have a Rhofia Webbie that I've yet to try out. I seem to recall from other reviews that the paper quality on Leuchtturm was somewhere between Moleskine and Rhodia.

Inked: Aurora Optima EF (Pelikan Tanzanite); Franklin Christoph Pocket 20 Needlepoint (Sailor Kiwa Guro); Sheaffers PFM I Reporter/Fine (Diamine Oxblood); Franklin Christoph 02 Medium Stub (Aurora Black); Platinum Plaisir Gunmetal EF (Platinum Brown); Platinum Preppy M (Platinum Blue-Black). Leaded: Palomino Blackwing 602; Lamy Scribble 0.7 (Pentel Ain Stein 2B); Uni Kuru Toga Roulette 0.5 (Uni Kuru Toga HB); Parker 51 Plum 0.9 (Pilot Neox HB)

Unfortunately with Leuchtturm I have always experienced bleedthrough with fountain pens. THe Rhodia webbie is another sport.

I've had varying paper quality in Leuchtturm 1917 notebooks. I tend to use finer nibs, so the bleedthrough doesn't bother me that much. However, the way the ink will show on the paper may vary. I really like their designs and such, with the only problem being the fact that they are a bit too thin.

I tried the Luechtturm also. Finer nibs needed to reduce bleedthrough. I don't care for the perforated pages.

It seems perforation may vary, When I read your comment I pulled out my A5 Leuchtturm to have a look because it was my recollection only the last half dozen pages were perforated, not all of them. I found that this, my latest notebook, has none. I buy their standard A5 journal, dotted or lined. This one is lined.

Like MHBru I mostly write recto apart from the odd note on what is already written so I pay little attention to possible bleed-through. Mostly they seem OK. Looking back, I agree a finer nib is better yet I continue to use any pen on them, with no feeling I should change brand.

I haven't noticed issues with show through or bleed through and have used broad and stub nibs and wet inks. I am on my second one.

I use A5 dot notebooks for daily diary entries. Fortunately, I've never had an issue with bleed through. Some ghosting but not enough to be bothered about. I write on both sides, and prefer these notebooks to anything Rhodia. Notebooks have more pages, less slickness, ribbons for marking your place, and numbered pages. I use the last few pages in the back to list page numbers with important facts, dates, and events.

All of my nibs are tuned to write on the wet side. Because of the relatively smaller page size of the A5,(5.8"x8.3") I tend to write a bit smaller to get more words on the page. Likewise, I don't use broad nibs here. Stick with Medium to Fine Nibs generally.

I'm pretty happy with these little notebooks. Unless they change the paper, I'll just keep using them.

Hi Old Salt. I only learned what recto writing was here as well! Like you, it's what I love about this forum. I learn new stuff all the time!

I'm never afraid to ask a stupid question here, or take the time to write out a long explanation for a nube with a problem. This is a special place where people from all over the world, from different customs, languages and economic backgrounds not only get along, but help each other out.

Me thinks, the world would be a better, safer place if more people used fountain pens and acted like we do towards each other.

Someone did say the pen is mightier than the sword👍

I have a 1917 A5 hardcover, lined (6mm). There is ghosting, but I am still easily able to write on both sides. No bleed at all with Pilot Vanishing Point Fine and both Pilot cartridge and Iroshizuku inks. I believe it's 80 g/sm paper.

It's a well-designed notebook, and one of the few that has 6mm ruled lines that isn't moleskine.

Old salt, I agree... the world would be a far better place if it treated everyone the way we do here. Abstract49.. I did not know that but it makes perfect sense. Another new factoid!
