Tomoe River and Rhodia both do it, using Iroshizuku Ink right now... What's annoying is that this nib is doing the same exact thing that my Pelikan M205 Fine Nib (which puts down as broad as a line as the F-C) is doing. And that went back to Chartpak for the second time. It does it even after pausing for only a few seconds. I may try another flush and some other ink. I may try making the nib a little wetter, as it is definitely on the drier side.

 

I have a few FC pens. They do tend to be on the drier side of things, unless you talk them into adjusting it to be wetter at a pen show. I haven't done that but I'm very tempted.

 

One medium nib I had from them was exceptionally dry. A few emails and they gave me some instructions on how to adjust it; works much better now. If they hadn't, the option to send the nib back to them for attention was available. I totally recommend contacting them if you're having problems with a nib.

Will all broad nibs have some level of hard starting on downstrokes? I got a Franklin Christoph Broad and it sometimes won't put down ink until after the first downstroke which is obnoxious. I don't see any babies bottom on it, unless i was writing with a VERY shallow angle. Am I expecting too much? I've yet to found a non-stub broad that just works 100%

Broad nibs should NEVER have a problem in any direction. I suspect a flow/feed problem. What you describe is a dry tip that’s only starting after the stroke moves the tines apart just enough to get flow to the business end.

It seems like the slit wasn't tapered enough, so F-C had me spread the wings a bit to force the taper and now it seems to be OK! Yay! I wonder if my Pelikan is having the same issue...

The nib is going back to F-C... I just have really bad luck with broad nibs apparently. There's a good taper to it but it just won't simply work all of the time. I have a TWSBI broad that does the same thing. They both look great under the loupe with a good taper. Maybe too much taper? I can't seem to open the tines using a brass shim very much, I need more practice.

It's not an either/or. There's a happy medium between the two where the nib floats easily without splashing or dragging.

It would seem one of the cost cutting measures at the lower end.

 

F-C aren't cheap for what they are.

Not many new broad nibbed acquisitions recently. But one special pen did come to me recently. It is a rather subdued custom pen by the late, great Joe Cali. This is almost a "boring" pen by Joe's whimsical standards but it is comfortable to hold and use. The business end sports an 18K Bexley nib with a stubbed B. As a collector of Bexley pens this was a plus for me.

 

I have not had the chance to write with the pen yet as i am just back from holiday but will report back once it is in action. for now a photo of the nib and the pen.

Got my nib back, same issues. Going back to F-C again. I've been writing with a FPR Himalaya broad all week and have been enjoying it. Not much personality but it has been consistent. The nib makes nails feel like wet noodles. I want to make it wetter but that could be a challenge.
