Nakaya 17Mm Long Cigar Chinkin Dragonflies

I have fallen in love with this pen Nakaya 17mm Long Cigar Chinkin Dragonflies. At $4,000.00 it is beyond my budget but I wonder if any fellow FPN members with more disposable income than I own it and if so their impressions. Its beauty is beyond debate. Is the extra size an issue? I should add that any feedback by Nakaya lovers whether you own this pen or not is welcome .

I think this pen is absolutely beautiful. Indeed I have admired it for years, online, and would love to see it at a pen show. However, I will never be able to afford it, and even if I could I would hesitate. The cost of that pen goes way beyond my comfort level for a personal item. I'd rather spend that amount of money on free time, lying around the house, staring at the ceiling and daydreaming!

I do have a Naka Ai I adore so I would never cast stones! If I were the kind of person who would and could spend 4000 on a pen, this pen might be the one. I love the base color and the incredible detail and skill of the engraved dragonfly and vegetation. To me. it represents something about the best in human beings, their love of beauty and nature, their skill and discipline, all directed at the creation of a humble intimate object. I would be more than happy to be invited to drool over this pen in someone else's pen case.

As far as the comfort goes, I've not seen this particular pen in person, but I have seen the long cigar at pen shows and I have a Naka-ai. Nakayas are exceptionally light and well-balanced pens. The long cigar has a great elongated section that is very comfortable. I would imagine the pen would be very comfortable. If you like Platinum nibs (which I do), you will like Nakaya nibs.

Edited to add: just saw that this is the 17 mm wide pen. That would be large but still comfortable I think. The section is still thinner than a 149and concave.

Thanks. You have beautifully expressed the quality that is so appealing in hand crafted art, pens, painting, pottery, etc. This was made by a human taking meticulous care with his/her craft.

As a Nakaya admirer, I find this pen to be one of the most beautiful they make. I hope to purchase it if my circumstances improve.

This really is a beautiful pen. I have a 17mm Nakaya, and I love the size and how it feels in my hand.

For me the 17mm size is the most comfortable Nakaya. The longer grip section combined with the greater girth made the pen ideal. It does make the nib look a little small however.

Tis a beautiful thing for sure. I have spent a lot on watches and a fair amount on pens. I have a Naka-ai as well like LuckyKate above and it's a great pen. Nakaya make wonderful things. That being said, I could never spend $4K on a pen. I admire the artistry of it, but I would never use it at that price. $650 for a Naka-ai means that pen gets taken very well care of, but does get used. The Dragonflies is more of a shelf art piece to me and it's well, well, well beyond my means. I hope you get it one day if you adore it so much though. Art is made to be appreciated in all its forms.

Thanks to all for your feedback. Thanks to you Zaddick for your comments on the size. That was a concern (besides the price). I start my savings campaign today to buy this beautiful pen. As an artwork it is relatively inexpensive.

I know nothing about this brand, but let me encourage you. I recently sent off the bulk of my collection in order to afford something special in another brand. Some people perceive "value" in terms of cash only. But art feeds the soul. To not only own a great piece of art, but use it daily (pens are tough with proper maintenance), will feed your spirit as well as providing a great writing experience.

By the time you have the money for this, you'll also be experienced enough to order just the right nib to suit your hand. You are worth it!

that's real nice hand-craft . i don't have a fountain pen as expensive, but i do have their $800 nakaya fp with a much simpler urushi work and i find it stunning.
