Making A Custom Pen From Acrylic Blanks

Tarundurga

Recommended Posts

Has anyone bought an acrylic blank and got an Indian pen maker to create a pen out of it? It'll be great if you can share some advice on this:

1. Where did you buy the blank?

2. How did you select the right size?

3. Who did you give it to for making a pen

4. Is it worth the effort?

Lots of questions I know... but I am really curious, and would love to have a truly custom made pen.

1. Where did you buy the blank?

There are lots of sites. just google pen blanks.

2. How did you select the right size?

See what the usual size is, or ask one of the pen makers.

3. Who did you give it to for making a pen

Fosfor. But ASA has also made acrylic pens for me.

4. Is it worth the effort?

Depends on how you would value the pen. For me it was worth the effort.

Thanks... where did you get your blanks from?

Both my sets of blanks were originally sourced from the turners workshop.

When I had to get a pen made for my graduation, I approached Fosfor. He can probably help you out with getting a good nib and even a good set of blanks.

ASA should be getting some nice blanks sometime now and you can ask them too.

My brother who is a hobbyist woodworker gave me a pen blank, and I reached out to Fosfor to make me my third Islander.

He made the pen and suggested a protective layer, and it was worth the extra effort. The blank came from a tree in my late parents' yard, so it was special.

It is indigenous to the ABC islands, in Aruba it's called kwihi. If you follow the link, the seedpods of the actual tree were not as elongated, they look more curled up, but otherwise the article describes it accurately. Here is a short mention in the papiamento wikipedia.

And you're right, the pen is very special to me.

mhGuda... that pen is so much more than a writing instrument. I'd cherish that forever.

Yes, you're right. It's a reminder of home in the broadest sense - the place may not be there to go back to but the memory I carry in my heart always. And of course happy memories of the family are always there to revisit... as are my siblings, happily.

It is very good to be able to have it as a pen - especially as nice a pen as this one is.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
