First Gen Starwalkers: Fineliner Vs Ballpoint Body?

Recommended Posts

Hey folks.

I'm planning on getting one of those first gen metal-body Starwalker, the rubber/metal one or the full metal one. However I can't test them first and would like some insights on the balance and weight differences between those two.

I'll be rolling BOTH with a ballpoint. I have an adapter for the fineliner one to be able to fit the ballpoint refill. So this question is all about the body itself, not the refill.

In case I go with the fineliner, I won't be posting the cap.

Finally, I'll be using it for architectural sketches, drawings and sketches (if that helps).

All thoughts and inputs will be deeply appreciated.

I actually have a full collection of the Montblanc StarWalkers. Literally every single model that has been released. What I've found is that I don't even touch the rollerballs at all and have stuck with using the fountain pens and ballpoints. The ballpoints are the best because they grip sections area perfectly ergonomically made. The bulbous grips are perfect for long writing sessions. Another reason I like the BPs is the ease of use with the twist mechanism. They can be used one handed! I prefer the weight of the metal models because they feel more balanced in my hands. Also the added weight of the metal makes writing with the ballpoint a breeze.

In regards to my opinion of the best years of production, the earlier rounder models are better than the newer models with the flat domes. The grips on the earlier models feel nicer and the tip is just a tad closer to the grip. The new models are okay, but no as good as the old ones.

The main reason I no longer use the rollerball StarWalkers are because they are inconvenient to cap and uncap. An additional reason is that both the rollerballs and Fineliner refills run out and dry out quickly. You also mentioned you don't post your pens. I typically do not post either, however, the threads on the back end of the StarWalkers are there because the pens are designed to be posted. Posting them makes them super back heavy.
